The biggest Trade Union dispute in Irish History was the Dublin Lockout of 1913 . The trade union movement in Ireland had just begun . Led by Jim Larkin of the National Union of Dock Labourers (NUDL) and Later his own Union - The Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU) , workers up and down the country were being united by Larkin to campaign for better conditions and wages . In August 1913 , hundreds of workers were fired by the Dublin United Tramway Company accused of joining larkin's union . In Solidarity , the other workers went on strike . Employer groups responded by forcing employees to a sign a pledge not to support the striking workers or join larkin's union . When the workers refused they were locked out of their Jobs and replaced with scab labourers from Britain , for seven months twenty thousand Irish were locked out of their Jobs and plunged into proverty , Larkin was vilified by the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent and the Evening Herald all of which were owned by the Employer leading the Lockout , William Martin Murphy
