Belgium’s assisted suicide rate increases 247% in last eight years
According to the Federal Commision for the Control and Evaluation of Euthanasia, 2,357 people were reported to have had their lives ended by euthanasia in the state last year.
This is a slight increase from 2017’s figures (2,309), indicating a steady trend that can be seen in the nation’s staggering 247% increase in deaths by assisted suicide or euthanasia since 2010.
Of the 2,357 reported deaths, 2.4% (57) were for mental or behavioural issues, with a further 83 people euthanised exclusively due to psychiatric conditions.
There were also 22 cases recorded of the deceased being deemed incompetent at the time of the procedure but euthanised on the basis of a previous request.
Euthanasia as well as physician-assisted suicide have been legal in Belgium since 2002 .
Euthanasia for children is legal since 2014. A 17-year-old was the first minor to be legally killed by assisted suicide in Belgium back in 2016 .
