Daylight Saving Time , Why the Clocks spring forward

Daylight Saving Time , Why the Clocks spring forward

All of Europe (except Iceland) , most of the USA (except Arizona and Hawaii) , and most of North America practice Daylight Saving Time where the clocks 'spring forward' 1 hour in Spring and 'fall back' 1 hour at the end of Autumn.

The period when the clocks are 1 hour ahead is called Daylight Saving Time (DST) or 'summer time' in some Countries.

In Europe , clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March , and back 1 hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October.

In the United States and Canada it starts at 2am on the 2nd Sunday in March and ends at 2am on the 1st Sunday in November while in Mexico it begins at 2:00 am on the first Sunday in April ending at 2am on the last Sunday in October .

The idea began in the late 19 Century .

In 1895 . A Wellington Post office Clerk George Vernon Hudson presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two hour daylight saving shift .

Hudson was an amateur natural scientist who liked to study insects after work . He argued that people could make better use of their spare time after work , if the evenings where brighter which could be done by moving two hours of brightness in the morning when people are asleep anyway into the evening . Hudson argued that increasing the daylight hours in summer would also reduce fuel consumption by cutting down on the use of artificial light in the evening.

In Europe , a British Builder named William Willett was proposing a similar idea .

In 1907 , Willett published a pamphlet entitled 'The Waste of Daylight' that outlined his argument that after work hours in the summer, the quality of people's recreational time is restricted due to a waste of daylight which could easily be fixed by moving the clock forward .

The waste of daylight

Everyone appreciates the long light evenings . Everyone laments their shrinkage as Autumn approaches , and nearly everyone has given utterance to a regret that the clear bright light of early morning, during Spring and Summer months , is so seldom seen or used .

Nevertheless , Standard time remains so fixed , that for nearly half the year the sun shines upon the land , for several hours each day , while we are asleep and is rapidly nearing the horizon when we reach home after the work of the day is over .

Under the most favourable circumstances , there then remains only a brief spell of declining daylight in which to spend the short period of leisure at our disposal . Now , if some of the hours of wasted sunlight in spring , summer and Autumn could be withdrawn from the beginning and added to the end of the day , many advantages would be gained by all, and especially by those who wish to spend in the open air whatever time they may have at their disposal after the duties of the day have been discharged.

- Extract from 'The waste of daylight' by William Willett

In 1916 , German Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm inspired by William Willett's idea became the first country to introduce daylight saving time in order to save fuel for the War Effort by bringing more sunlight to the evenings . Shortly afterwards Britain and the rest of Europe adopted DST with the USA following suit on 31 March 1918 after it entered the war.
