Galway Pro Choice protest film release : "We are outraged . we will not stand for it"
On Friday Evening  , members of the Galway 'Pro Choice' network staged a protest outside the Omniplex Cinema in Salthill demanding that the Cinema remove a film called 'unplanned' from its viewing list.

We are outraged that this film is being shown in Galway, and we will not stand for it.

Please contact the Salthill Omniplex to let them know you will not be stepping foot in their premises until they pull this film and apologise to all the people they will hurt by screening this hate-filled film

Let's let these anti-choicers know that Galway will not stand for this! Bring a sign, bring a banner, bring some words!

The Film 'unplanned' was released in Irish Cinemas on October 4th and tells the true story of Abby Johnson , the youngest ever director of a planned parenthood abortion clinic in Texas . One day Johnson was called in to assist in an ultrasound guided abortion , the experiences she had that day would make her question everything and transform her life forever . Soon afterwards , Johnson quit her job and became a pro life advocate .

The movie, directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman and starring Ashley Bratcher as Johnson, grossed $19 million in the USA over 19 weeks according to Box Office Mojo and in August became the top selling DVD in Amazon sales . Obstacles to the movie’s success included its “R” rating from the Motion Picture Association of America and censorship on social media.

Galway Councillor Pauline O'Reilly of the Green Party wrote to the Omniplex Cinema demanding they stop showing the movie to her constituents while another Green Party Councillor Martina O'Connor was actually pictured outside the Cinema holding a protest banner.

As a city councillor and spokesperson for the green party i wish to draw your attention to the nature of a film called unplanned that you were screening from today . this is considered to be right wing propaganda and I expect there will be considerable fallout

I request that the cinema does not continue to screen the film and I would appreciate a phone call to discuss as many of my constituents will be very upset by the contents

 - Green Party Councillor Pauline O'Relly

Also calling for censorship of the film was People Before Profit which posted to its Facebook Page :

Omniplex should cancel all screenings of this piece of propaganda. Contact them and let them know Galway won't accept this . It's an 'anti-choice' propaganda film, funded by American Christian extremists . It is filled with medical and factual inaccuracies and exists only to propagate lies and an extremist conservative viewpoint, and to slander the organisation Planned Parenthood.

The Irony

Almost 25 years ago comedy writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews wrote the third episode of Father Ted in which two priests Fr Ted and Fr Dougal were sent by the Bishop to protest outside the local cinema against a film deemed unsuitable for the local community . 25 years later , could they or anyone have ever imagined that it would now be liberals doing the protesting of films in Ireland .

really enjoyed listening to Abby talking to Niall Boylan on classic hits last night . More radio shows should have her on to tell her story . it really is fascinating . haven't seen the film yet myself but heard from a lot of people it was really good .
#
Its the Cinemas "choice" to show the film and its peoples "choice" to watch it , dont like it , dont watch it , pro choice dont make me laugh , bloody fascists trying to stop people having a good time and watching whatever they want to watch in the cinema
#
AHHH Pauline O Reilly of THE GREEN PARTY, you know the morally upright socially concerned Green Party who wish to introduce Wolves back in to Ireland among other frankly insane proposals!. Well THEY must be right and Cllr O Reilly's slanderous claims against Unplanned and the film makers therefore MUST be backed by The Green Party? Legally speaking I mean??
#
these people are dangerous . little dictators the lot of them . what gives o'reilly the right to dictate to others what they can and cant watch . the nerve of some people
#
I can answer your question Dublin Guy. This is nothing more than an act of pure desperation on their part. You see, IF they allow without protest the viewing of Unplanned the film, then they run the risk of losing the moral high ground, they would run the risk of being called out for the lies they told the people of Ireland about abortion.
All political parties on the left today world wide, are absolutely banking on (what they believe fact) that those protesting today will in the next two - four years be their voter base!.
#
hard to believe how childish these guys are . if i want to go to the cinema i will and whatever i watch is none of their damn business . get a life .
#
