Nigerian Priest - Nigerians who pose as refugees are "fraudsters"

politics

The following account appeared in the Irish Times on 14 August 2000
I am a Nigerian priest who came to Dublin from Rome a couple of weeks ago to study. Shortly after my arrival in Dublin I was asked: "Are you a refugee?" I replied: "No, I am not, I am a Nigerian".

It was then I learned that a large number of Nigerians are in Ireland as asylum-seekers or refugees. I met a few who, not realising that like them I am Nigerian, spoke freely of their country's "woes". I wondered whether it is the same Nigeria we are talking about.

Based on what they said, I challenge those Nigerians parading themselves as political or religious asylum seekers in Ireland to a public debate on what has caused them to flee to these shores.

Many of the stories told about Nigerian oppression are lies and fabrications. For instance, some Nigerian here have claimed that young female family members have been forcibly circumcised. Nigerian law forces no one to be circumcised. The Nigerian penal code prohibits the infliction of all tribal marks and mutilations, with a penalty of seven years' imprisonment.

Another claim made by Nigerian asylum-seekers is that they are fleeing political persecution. But their claims that this is based on their ethnic or regional background is false.

For the record, the Nigerian political situation is one of the military versus the civilians. There is little north-south conflict. Two elections ago, when Mr Abiola topped the poll but the military did not allow him to take power, Mr Abiola won the vote because northerners supported him, a southerner, instead of Mr Tofa, Mr Abiola's main rival, from the north. In the most recent election, Mr Obasanjo, a southerner, became President, although he had little support in the south.

I find it peculiar that those who claim to be fleeing unrest in Nigeria are here, rather than in any of the many stable places in Nigeria, a country many times bigger than Ireland with a population of 126 million. Real refugees can't afford the exorbitant air fares to get here. Most Nigerians in Europe are simply seeking a more comfortable life. A distinction must be made between economic migrants and those seeking asylum from political or religious persecution.

I don't blame Nigerians for coming to Europe, but I weep for those who come here claiming to be refugees. We have a name for fraudsters in Nigeria; we call them 419ners (after a section in the Nigerian constitution dealing with fraud), and some stories about them make us laugh.

A Nigerian pretending to be a legitimate refugee from Sierra Leone was stopped by immigration officials in Italy and asked to prove his bona fides by singing the Sierra Leonian national anthem.

He resorted to a song in his native Nigerian dialect and, obviously taken in, the immigration officials let him through. He pretended to be from Sierra Leone because it is undergoing far more unrest than Nigeria. But by falsely declaring themselves refugees they insult themselves and embarrass everyone else who is a Nigerian.

We want a situation where all will head home to rebuild the "shattered" nation. If we all run away, this rebuilding will not be done. Can we as a people sincerely and proudly proclaim: "I am not a refugee, I am a Nigerian"?

Having falsely renounced their homeland by declaring to be refugees, all self-respect is lost by many young Nigerians.

It is true that there are violent outbreaks sometimes in Nigeria because of our fragile ethno-religious difficulties, but this is normal in a nascent democracy. However, young Nigerians are capitalising on these fragile situations by twisting and magnifying them to earn a meal ticket on the streets of Europe. To understand the situation, imagine Irish people from Cork or Dublin turning up in Nigeria and taking advantage of trouble in Belfast to claim they are refugees.

All these false claims of refugee status and our forgotten self-esteem are pointers that we Nigerians are a dissatisfied lot. We are a nation in search of an identity. We need a national identity we can be proud of. That would partly help Nigerians to never again falsely declare themselves refugees and asylum-seekers. We want a situation where all head home to rebuild their nation.

If we all run away, this will not happen. Why do we not as a people sincerely and proudly proclaim: "I am not a refugee, I am a Nigerian"?

Thank You Ronan and absolute Kudos on a truly excellent article!

The biggest SHAME here is NOT those (from Nigeria or elsewhere) who choose to cheat an extremely poor asylum system, that (at the VERY least appears) has been for some reason designed purposely with certain loop holes!. Nor is it the fault of those who fraudulently choose to take what they can from the Irish Purse, as the system is designed in a manner to encourage such behaviour!.

The real SHAME is absolutely the property of those who truly make a fortune from exploiting human greed, a glaring fault within human DNA.

I, like most God fearing decent people lay awake at night, giving their last thought or perhaps whisper a prayer before sleep for the people of Yemen (Just as an example), where a giant of power, influence and MONEY is currently and openly killing Men, Women and Children, simply because (well) they can!.
The cries of protest from The UN, Europe, Asia and the mighty United States are deafening, and yet without result. BUT THEN AGAIN, THEY ARE NOT!

We all know little is said or done for the victims and as a direct result the people of the countries and continents mentioned above, do their individual very best to DO SOMETHING!. That something is to give money, what they can afford to charities and (so called) NGO's in the hope that even a small amount of what is donated might just reach Little Alli or Little Aasma and make their lives better or perhaps provide some of the medicines desperately needed.

DO NOT get me wrong, this is wonderful thing to do and frankly it points to the often overlooked fact that the peoples of the world are both decent and DO CARE!.
Also do not get me wrong in reading this piece, IT IS NOT a political statement NOR am I some kind of SJW trying to get your attention and collect Woke points in the process.

In fact the purpose of this piece is to bring to collective attention the fact that the absolute and genuine MISERY of those truly in dire need, HAS become a very successful Billions of Dollars, money making industry for the totally inscrutable!.
Now, NOT for one moment am I suggesting that ALL charities or for that matter ALL NGO's are there to take as much of your hard earned money as possible for nefarious reasons. Neither am I suggesting that one should not make donations to those who genuinely need help, not for a moment! in fact I encourage it!.

My only point here is that European Governments and the EU itself (among others) is simply and ACTIVELY playing on the collective conscience of it's peoples and in doing so is benefiting directly & mostly those who choose to make a fortune from Human misery.

One only has to hear on radio one of their representatives or read one of their payed for articles and it quickly becomes obvious that there is almost a cult like , bad tasting and equally very strange atmosphere existing within some of these NGO'S and organizations. Furthermore, if any body, NGO , Charity or for that matter Government is pushing for certain asylum seekers from certain countries to be accepted, even going as far as teaching these people how to cheat the system, THEN their reason is GREED!.

this priest is right , I mean nigeria is listed as a 'safe country of origin' by the UK , their president is on record as saying that they should "stay at home and help rebuild the country" . no direct flights from nigeria to ireland but yet they arrive at our airports claiming asylum and us the bigger fools believe them and put them up in hotels . we must be the laughing stock of the world , i think we're the only country entertaining them at this stage
#
should never have been allowed to happen . they are also currently the largest group of non eu migrants on Dublin's social housing list .
#
It seems we are getting Nigeria's most useless , well if you offer inducements to wasters then you will attract wasters , nothing is being done about it because those who claim to be the govt (unelected) led by Kelerghi boy himself, are actively trying to destroy this countrys culture and identity on behalf of their globalist controllers , and it is our identity and culture which they want to destroy , they don't care about the economy that can be restarted anytime they control the rise and fall of economies but culture is different , our culture and all other European cultures stand in the way of a federal Europe and ultimately a one world Government that's why they want to destroy it,and how do you do that? well by bringing in an influx of people from an alien way of life , they may as well be from another planet !
#
and this is from the horses mouth , A Nigerian Priest is telling us that Nigerians parading as asylum seekers in Ireland are telling lies and fabrications , or 419ners he calls them after a section in the Nigerian constitution dealing with fraud . This is as far back as 2000 , why is nobody listening . Nigerians are the top nationality living in Asylum Accomodation in Ireland . Why are we entertaining them . This is the big question . Its costing us a fortune to keep all these people .
