Opinion : European Unionists and the End of Democracy

Opinion : European Unionists and the End of Democracy
Many of us have been on the losing side of referendums over the years . It hurts and its hard to take but the idea that any referendum result should be ignored is very worrying.

There is a worrying school of thought among European Unionists that if an EU referendum is lost its simply because the public were misinformed and consequently another referendum must be held or the vote should be ignored . The Nice and Lisbon referendums in Ireland and the recent Brexit referendum in Britain are prime examples of this school of thinking. It can never be the case that actually , maybe the the public were fully informed but simply didn't agree with the treaty etc and voted accordingly .

In relation to the Brexit referendum , there was a big push by European Unionists for either a second referendum or simply for the public vote to be ignored based on the reasoning that the public must have been misinformed .

It is the nature of referendum campaigns that things are said which may or may not be true , The time to address these points is during the campaign . Both sides are given plenty of opportunity during the campaign to challenge the other sides arguments and to present their stall to the public .In addition , the public have plenty of opportunity during a campaign to research the facts for themselves and vote accordingly . To argue that a referendum should be re-run on the basis that the losing side failed to challenge an argument or raise an issue which they should have would lead to infinite numbers of referendums .

The EU remain campaign were no strangers to untruths . For example , the remain campaign repeated over and over again that young people wouldn't be able to go abroad and study and that it would shut down so many doors for them , this is simply not true , UNESCO statistics show that most foreign students studying inside the EU actually come outside the EU , which means that a Britain outside the EU would result in even greater opportunity for young people in Britain to study in other EU states if they so desired which most dont want to anyway .

Democracy is a fragile thing . Once you cross the line and decide to ignore the first Democratic Decision taken by the people , you have a democracy in name only and are into some other form of government.

In the 1932 elections in Germany ,  the National Socialist German Workers Party became the largest party in the Reichstag . While in office they went about dismantling the democratic processes in order to impose their will on the people .  I cant help but draw parallels with these people and the European Unionists of today who are taking control in a similar manner and using the same methods of control along the way.

the 4th Reich is alive and well in Brussels . some of these people need to spend time in North Korea or somewhere in order to fully learn the true value of democracy .

when the german socialists were building gas chambers , Ireland was ploughing fields and sowing potatoes . We like other countries had no interest whatsoever in gassing people or killing anyone .

World war II was the result of socialism , the same force which now runs the EU Commission and the European Union . yet they pretend like the whole thing is to stop wars when in fact it was only germany which runs the whole thing which was picking on other countries and starting all the wars

Legally,if we had a govt.with balls and the interest of Ireland at heart then the Nice and Lisbon(2nd) referendums could be challenged as void, but we don't. The same goes for the Bank bailout...but we don't .Also so called refugees...but we don't. The issiue of Irish Confetti passports...but we don't . The Islamification of Ireland...but we don't .80% foreign students (20% Irish) in our university's ..b.w.d hospital beds...b.w.d etc. etc.Common denominator = a highly incompetent form of Govt.and overpaid fools...GET THEM OUT

Thank You Charlie!, Always a finger firmly on the pulse.

You are correct in your summation & description of both Brexit and the European Union.

Another thing that has always worried me about these referendums is the absolute appalling turn out and equally extremely low victory number amounts, if victory be the correct description in these cases. ALL show the absolute apathy shown by Irish voters when it comes to EU referendum.

Among those I have spoken with at the time of the referendum and after, I have found that most who did not vote, chose not to bother because they felt / feel that it's an absolute foregone conclusion!. One Woman a former Fianna Fail Secretary & then Chairperson of a SW Dublin area cumann, told me that the EU Masters decide and (quote) the Gobshites in Dail Eireann carry out their (The EU's) wishes! (End Quote).

I have know this Woman now for over 35 years and remember her as a very positive person who faced the worst of times on the door step while seeking the vote for her beloved party. Yet without complaint year after year she would be there canvassing on door steps and outside supermarkets, always with a smile and heart felt hope. To hear her say such a thing, that frankly I have thought for many years now, was astounding to say the very least!. She much like myself, came from a family of cast iron Fianna Fail voters. So much so, that it was literally unthinkable to fail in ones duty to vote, never mind feel so let down that one not only doesn't bother to vote, but has also lost all faith in the party and OUR political system as a whole!.

While of course those I spoke to, or for that matter speak of here do not constitute a scientific sampling of the people of Ireland, their voting patterns or lack of. But it does point to the fact that the people of this country are almost completely disillusioned with politics and both the political systems of Ireland and her Masters in the EU.

Regarding Brexit, the very same disillusionment or Apathy of politics has existed in the UK for many years longer than it has here in Ireland. In fact many experts assign blame for Brexit pin point on voter apathy. There has always been a strong resistance in the UK against membership of the EU, which in part at least was responsible for the decision to keep the £ sterling as it's currency. Although a financial power house with great financial influence world wide, the people rightly viewed the intrusion in to the UK's decision making by the EU as a step too far and a dictatorship like undemocratic forcing upon the UK of unwanted and (in their view) unnecessary rulings, which like for example the fisheries rulings, were against the very lively hood and industries considered once the back bone of the UK.

This and other decisions which the people of the UK considered direct infringement of their sovereignty brought about the decision to seek either less intrusion from the EU or the absolute dissolving of the UK / EU partnership all together. In a "they will never leave" type of absolute certainty, PM Cameron from what he and his advisers considered a position of confidence, decided to have a referendum to (as they thought) get the absolute blessings of the people of the UK to continue in the current partnership with the EU. The outcome as they say is now history, the UK decided to exit, divorce or leave the EU, thus throwing the UK in to absolute mayhem and the clear and apparent division of her political parties and within government.

Since then there has been all sorts of promises made to fulfill Brexit along side EU threats and (friendly) warnings about the absolute destruction of the British Nation and it's economy if they decide to leave the EU!. Like former PM Cameron, PM Theresa May also fell on her sword as a direct result of her handling of Brexit, leaving the UK with a new PM in Boris Johnson a one time Conservative Bad Boy who against PM May decided to campaign in favour of Brexit. Yet the UK is still to this very day, years on undecided, unwilling or unable to fulfill it's promise to the people of the UK and fulfill the Democratic choice of the people!.

Then there is the EU, NOT at all happy with PM's Cameron and May for their failure to get the folk of the UK to toe the EU line. IT is and was not beyond the EU to do what poor Russia and her people are so often blamed for doing!, the crime of interfering in the democratic process of the UK, It's election process and some claim the day to day running of the very nation. It is also not beyond the President of the EU or one of his merry crew, openly slating the oh so uneducated, simple Folk of the UK for making a Democratic Choice!.

AS Charlie stated the Unelected (by people of member states) leaders of the EU will do everything in their collective powers to make Brexit near impossible, if not impossible all together, either by direct or indirect influence of the opposition to Brexit within the UK, through direct pressure financial or otherwise upon politicians within the Conservative Party and other political parties whose members which are democratically elected by and with the will of the British people, therefore against the wishes of the majority of the voting British people.

Brexit has actually been a great success, in the sense that it has for an astounding amount of people of EU member States, proven almost beyond doubt that the EU is both Undemocratic to it's very core and has a belief system that DOES NOT take in to account the wishes of the voting peoples of it's member states.

Whether Brexit will ever be brought to completion is a concern of the British people ALONE and this is as it should be!. NO other State, Body, Business concern or the EU itself for that matter should have ANY say, ANY influence or any damn business in the decisions of the British People, a decision reached via democratic means and by a democratically established Nation.

Sincere Apologies for such a lengthy reply.

I think thats lost on a lot of people , hitler was a socialist whos best friend Ernst Röhm was a gay icon while also a murderer . If you look at the socialist parties of today they still have a deep hatred for jews . Much of it was about re-distribution of the Jewish Wealth to the working classes but mostly for themselves
