Today, after so many years, the provision of the Lisbon Treaty establishing the possibility for the European Union Member States to have a Permanent Structured Cooperation on defence is going to be initiated.

Today we will launch a new page for the European Defence and I think this will be the news of the day.

I avoided commenting on this subject because it brings back memories of my Father (RIP). I often ask myself what he would think of Ireland today, how she has developed and now how her army is to be USED.

My Father was a soldier who served in the army of Ireland and as most people would tell you, once a soldier always a soldier.
He loved the Army and took genuine pride in having served his country, he also took great pride in the Irish Army serving as peace keepers abroad. You see most countries where the Irish army served in peace keeping roles, they were greatly admired for their honesty, honor and the way they treated those they were sent to protect.

This latest development takes the Irish army AWAY from her main duty, that of protectors of the state. Instead our army will be USED to satisfy the whims of Merkel, Macron and co. Ireland will no longer have what is described in military terms as, a standing army.

Obviously I can not ask the opinion of my Father, but then I genuinely feel I do not need to ask him. I know he would be enraged that the army of this nation could and may be used to enrich EU leaders such as Macron instead of (as it's creation dictates) serving to protect the people of Ireland.

totally against EU army myself , these tds are definitely off my voting list
#
I've no political affiliation , but get this , a fianna fail candidate called to my door and said she never heard of PESCO or that the party voted in favour of joining it . So basically you have people prepared to stand for Fianna Fail WITHOUT ACTUALLY KNOWING WHAT THE PARTY STANDS FOR , Crazy when you think about it . but there you , sad really .

Everyone opposed to an EU army should read the names on this list and tell them when they call to your door looking for votes .
#
We see EU military vehicles on streets of france during yellow vest protests , Varadkar says Irish soliders are in Mali as part of EU training mission . Juncker says he needs EU army to show Russia we are serious . The EU army is here and when it does eventually invade Russia we can all say goodbye
#
Hi Love Ireland,

I totally understand your concerns regarding a possible invasion of Russia. However, that is something that beyond doubt would break the EU once and for all!. There is no chance that EU troops could or would be used in such a theater.
However the greater concern is that Irish Troops (Once greatly admired and respected)could be used as cannon fodder for further invasions within the Middle East & Africa for example. Macron was anxious to get the USA involved in Mali and was point blank refused, so now he will use EU troops to take advantage of resources in such areas, under the false claim that they are there as peace keepers and OR to fight terrorism.

Regarding use of the Irish Army to make up (as it were) an EU army is something I believe was a decision taken by TD's WITHOUT the permission of the Irish people. In other words a decision that should have gone to referendum.

Love not Hate ,

spending billions of euro on weapons that will be used to bomb and kill people are not the values i want to share

count me out
#
well said kitty

shame on all who voted for this , not in my name either
#
this guy Juncker is so trustworthy he was forced to resign as prime minister of luxembourg over illegal phone tapping scandals

In May 2011, he told a meeting of the federalist European Movement that he often "had to lie" and that eurozone monetary policy should be discussed in "secret, dark debates". "I am for secret, dark debates"

and yet , the EU Commission appoints him as their President ?

The EU has now accelerated the process of a united states of europe

It already makes all of our laws , Now its time for the army

When you think of it , The EU Commission makes our laws which are then voted on by the European Parliament and Council .

The vast majority of people within these institutions are not irish and not elected by the Irish people . for example Ireland has just 11 meps out of a total of 751 .

This means that when an EU law comes to Ireland it has been influenced mostly by foreign politicians which is the akin to foreign rule

In fact , under home rule , offered to us by the british 100 years ago we would have had more influence in our own country then we do now .

the mind boggles
