The Day Jim Larkin was arrested for Hate Speech - 31 August 1913

The Day Jim Larkin was arrested for Hate Speech - 31 August 1913
The biggest Trade Union dispute in Irish History was the Dublin Lockout of 1913 .

The trade union movement in Ireland had just begun . Led by Jim Larkin of the National Union of Dock Labourers (NUDL) and Later his own Union - The Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU) ,  workers up and down the country were being united by Larkin to campaign for better conditions and wages .

In August 1913 , hundreds of workers were fired by the Dublin United Tramway Company accused of joining larkin's union . In Solidarity , the other workers went on strike . Employer groups responded by forcing employees to a sign a pledge not to support the striking workers or join larkin's union . When the workers refused they were locked out of their Jobs and replaced with scab labourers from Britain , for seven months twenty thousand Irish were locked out of their Jobs and plunged into proverty , Larkin was vilified by the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent and the Evening Herald all of which were owned by the Employer leading the Lockout , William Martin Murphy , Chairman of the Dublin United Tramway Company .

On 26th august , Larkin addressed a crowd of 10,000 people at Beresford Place in Dublin where he made a strong speech that he didn't care about a court order issued by chief Judge E.G Swifte banning a planned meeting of workers later that month on O'Connell street nor did he care much about the King either .

5 Days Later  , Larkin was arrested for the crime of Hate Speech using "seditious words" that .. "raised discontent and hatred among his majesty's subjects"

In 1990 , Jim Larkin's two unions the Irish Transport and General Workers Union and the Federated Workers Union of Ireland merged into one Union called SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union).

On Saturday 14 December , SIPTU along with a number of other Unions - Mandate , UNITE , Fórsa and the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO) will take part in a protest AGAINST Free Speech in Ireland . The Trade Unions are counter protesting a Free Speech Rally at the Dail . Slant.png

the crime of Hate speech was used to stop Jim Larkin and other trade unions officials like him , our government will use it in the same way as the crown , to put us down . I cant believe trade unions are siding with the government , spitting in the face of their founding father big jim larkin
#
and vin , i think this is what worries people ,that hate speech laws will be used to stop criticism of government
#
its hard to believe trade unions would be protesting against free speech given their history of oppression , I mean , Its all about money now , how much the union leaders can make off the backs of their members.
#
He was arrested because he " raised discontent and hatred amongst his majesty's subjects " and now, despite throwing off that shackle we are again under the shackles of a Traitors Govt. backed by EU, UN, ETC. ETC. They deny and destroy your Sovereignty and they Globally are trying to shut down FREE SPEECH because they themselves raise discontent and hatred. Why do we as respectful people accept this shite,GET THIS CRAP OUT OF IRELAND

Thank You Mike Irish!, for an excellent example of why we Irish can and MUST never allow external interests or our own government / political leaders to rob what is after all the only truly clear indication of a Free Society, it's collective right to Free Speech!.

May I also point out that if It was not for the Brave Women of Dunnes Stores in the '80's, who using their God given right of Free Speech, STOOD against all odds, against Government AND even initially against their Unions, to free political prisoners in South Africa and played a HUGE part in literally putting an end to Apartheid completely. NO Government worldwide would stand with the people of South Africa including our own and other political parties in Ireland at the time.

IF Not for Irish Free Speech then, Rugby players would not have felt they had the support of the people of this country, to stand up and say I will not play in South Africa! this was quickly followed by other brave Sports Men and Women who on seeing injustice took the very same stand against racism and Apartheid!.

IF NOT for Irish Free Speech, this wonderful act could and would never have happened, because the British Government would have asked our then government, to SHUT UP these Brave Women claiming that their words were HATE speech against the Crown & against the Government of South Africa and the end result would NEVER have been achieved!!.

This is a clear example, as is the example pointed to by Mike Irish above, of why we the Irish people MUST stand side by side, LGBTQI++ & Conservative, Gay & Straight, Male & Female against this vile abuse of our COLLECTIVE civil rights!, OUR COLLECTIVE RIGHTS as a people!.

for centuries , the crown forces arrested us irish for speaking out saying it was hate speech against the king , now our own people are punishing us , taking away our speaking rights . its horrible what they are doing
