Ireland set to sign controversial UN Migration Pact
On 10th and 11th December , government leaders from around the world will meet in Marrakech Morocco where they are expected to sign and adopt the UN Migration Pact or 'Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration' to give it its full title .
The Migration Pact is an immensly controversial document that requires its signatories to implement a set of objectives relating to migration matters .
Objective 15 of the pact requires governments to enact laws that give illegal migrants the same rights and access to public services as legal migrants
Enact laws and take measures to ensure that service delivery does not amount to discrimination against migrants on the grounds of national origin irrespective of cases where differential provision of services based on migration status might apply
Ensure that cooperation between service providers and immigration authorities does not exacerbate vulnerabilities of irregular migrants by compromising their safe access to basic services
Objectives 17 and 18 require governments to fund , train and create Media Professionals and Media outlets that will promote migration in a positive sensitive light while at the same time cracking down on media outlets that are are critical of migration.
17. Promote independent, objective and quality reporting of media outlets, including internet based information, including by sensitizing and educating media professionals on migration-related issues and terminology, investing in ethical reporting standards and advertising, and stopping allocation of public funding or material support to media outlets that systematically promote intolerance
18 . Promote awareness-raising campaigns in order to inform public perceptions regarding the positive contributions of safe, orderly and regular migration
A number of countries have already pulled out of signing the pact among them Austria, Hungary, Switzerland ,Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria ,Slovakia ,Israel, Australia and the USA while other countries have been plunged into crisis . In Estonia, the pact has resulted in violence on the streets after the parliament said it would sign it without getting majority support of its members. In Belgium , the coalition government was plunged into crisis after the main coalition partner the New Flemish Alliance threatened to withdraw its support for government when prime minister Charles Michel agreed to sign up to the pact . In Denmark , the Minister for Immigration Inger Støjberg said she wont be signing the pact and her government would have to find someone else to go to Marrakech . In Canada , The Trudeau government has been flooded with letters from Canadians asking that a national debate be held before the agreement is signed , however its Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said canada will be signing up and that 'world migration will be the norm' .
The European Commissioner for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulou said that adopting the pact would send a “clear signal” to African countries that European states are willing to cooperate them.
Tanaiste Simon Coveney said Ireland will be signing the pact .
I happen to be somebody who is quite liberal on immigration
We estimate over the next 20 years the population of Ireland will grow by an extra million people .
Linked to that estimate is that half of that number wont have been born in Ireland .
I think that will be a really good thing for Irish Society .
