A Muslim Woman and her Companion attending a performance of La Traviata at the Bastille Opera House in Paris was asked to leave after some of the Singers refused to sing to a faceless woman.
The Woman , a Tourist from one of the Gulf States was wearing a Niqab which is a cloth covering the entire Face leaving only the eyes visible . Its is worn by many women in Muslim Countries. The Woman was sitting with her Companion in front row seats just behind the conductor when she was spotted by one of the Singers in the second Act .
Jean-Philippe Thiellay , deputy director of the opera house said he was alerted in the second act by a singer , Some performers said they didnt want to sing , if it wasnt sorted out , They didnt like performing for a faceless audience member" .
During the Interval , the woman was approached by an Inspector who asked her to remove her veil or leave , the woman and her companion then left the Opera House.
In 2010 , the French Senate passed an Act of Parliament called the "Act prohibiting concealment of the face in public space" .
As of April 2011, it is illegal to wear a face-covering veil or other mask in public places unless provided for by law . The law applies to all citizens, including men and non-Muslims, who may not cover their face in public except where specifically provided by law (such as motor-bike riders and safety workers) and during established occasional events (such as some carnivals) .
The only exceptions to a woman wearing a niqab in public will be if she is travelling in a private car or worshiping in a religious place .
The law provides for fines of up to 30,000 and one year in prison , if found guilty of illegal face covering.
It is estimated that about 2,000 women in France were affected by the law when it came into force.
Back in 2010 , news of the Law sparked hundreds of people to protest in Pakistan .
Many Muslims are divided over the wearing of the Niqab and other face veils , some say its obligatory in Islam while others say its not . while others say its a cultural thing.
Whatever the case may be , if an Irish or French Woman goes to Pakistan or some of the other Middle Eastern Countries she is required to cover at least her head and neck , she is required to dress according to their cultural / religous traditions . Likewise , Its only fair that Muslim women coming to the west should respect our traditions and culture , it works both ways .
