UK Census 2011 - 7% decrease in white British

In the 1991 census , the White ethnic group accounted for 94.1 per cent of the population. In 2001 that had fallen to 91.3 per cent . In 2011 it had fallen to 86 per cent .

White British fell by 7% over the 10 year period between 2001 and 2011 from 87.5 per cent in 2001 to 80.5 per cent in 2011.

In total , 48.2 million people (86 %) reported their ethnic group as White - 80.5% of these were British (45.1 million) followed by Any Other White (4.4% or 2.5 million). Indian was the next largest ethnic group with 1.4 million people (2.5 per cent) followed by Pakistani (2.0 per cent) 

The Asian/Asian British ethnic group categories had the largest increases between the 2001 and 2011 Censuses. People identifying as Pakistani and Indian each increased by around 0.4 million

In 2011 , Polish were the second largest group of non-UK born residents increasing by half a Million between 2001 and 2011 (a nine-fold increase). Poland joined the EU in May 2004 giving resident the rights to free movement and employment in the UK.

London had one of the lowest percentages of White British accross England and Wales at 44.9 per cent and the highest proportions for most minority ethnic groups including African (7.0 per cent),Indian (6.6 per cent), and Caribbean (4.2 per cent). The lowest proportions of White British were found in the London boroughs of Newham (16.7 per cent) and Brent (18.0 per cent). Outside London, Slough had the lowest percentage of White British at 34.5 per cent

The West Midlands had a higher than average percentage of minority ethnic groups: Pakistani at 4.1 per cent, Indian at 3.9 per cent and Caribbean at 1.5 per cent. It also had a lower than average White ethnic group at 82.7 per cent and White British at 79.2 per cent.

Forest Heath (East of England) was the only local authority to see an increase in White British between 2001 and 2011 (by 0.8 percentage points). The proportion of White British decreased in the remaining local authorities in England and Wales, with the largest decrease in Barking and Dagenham at 31.4 percentage points.

25.7 million people (58%) were in a relationship living as part of a couple . 91% or 23.4 million of these were in a relationship with someone from the same ethnic group. 9% or 2.3 million were in an inter-ethnic relationship but the most common of these was between Other White and White British .

There were 11.9 million dependent children in England and Wales in 2011 . 7% lived in a multiple ethnic household where there was an inter-ethnic relationship . The majority of dependent children lived in a household with the same ethnic group partnership (67%) .
