Martino announced as new Mexico head coach

Martino announced as new Mexico head coach

  • The Argentinian coach was presented at an official press conference

  • Tasked with leading El Tri to Qatar 2022

  • The 56-year-old takes charge of his third national team

Gerardo 'Tata' Martino has been announced as the new head coach of the Mexican national team, following the departure of Juan Carlos Osorio after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.

The Argentinian was presented at an official press conference hosted by the Mexico's football federation, Federacion Mexicana de Futbol FMF.

"My commitment is to work with honesty and respect," said Martino at the official press conference. "With the players here in Mexico and the leagues around the world, we can build a great team. We are interested in showing a team with a clear style of play."

Martino just completed two successful seasons with newly-formed Major League Soccer MLS side Atlanta United, culminating by finishing as league champions in December 2018.

He returns to national team management for a third different time, having led Paraguay from 2007 to 2011 and Argentina from 2014 to 2016. His time with Paraguay saw him lead La Albirroja to the nation's best-ever finish at a World Cup finals, which saw them reach the quarter-finals at South Africa 2010. As Argentina national team coach, he led La Albiceleste to two consecutive Copa America finals only to lose on each occasion.

"I saw Mexico as one of the teams that has evolved the most in the last 20 years," Martino told reporters. "To be able to play right up there with some of the best in the world shows how far Mexico have come.

"The main characteristic is the level of talent that the Mexican football players have and that sets the team apart. There is a mix of veterans and young players not just in Liga MX but also playing in Europe," he said. "I am not here to make demands. I am here to share my opinions. But I am very happy to see that we have young players such as Diego Lainez and Roberto Alvarado. We will be looking to see that they grow."

Martino will be tasked with ultimately leading Mexico to the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. Mexico have made it through to the Round of 16 but failed to get to the last eight on seven consecutive occasions.

The first matches on Martino's calendar are friendlies with Chile on 21 March and Paraguay on 25 March. He will also be tasked with leading El Tri at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.
