February 24th, 2020
This weekend saw the return of the Leinster GAA Chadwicks Club Hurling League for 2020. With storm Dennis having his say a number of grounds across the Province were unplayable. That being said Round 1 kicked off in Ernest for a number of teams as they begin their journey towards warmer days and faster pitches.
Division 1 Group 1 saw all teams taste action with last years Division 2 Winners Blacks & Whites of Kilkenny joining the top tier. The Kilkenny side welcomed Offalys Shinrone to Tom Walsh Park. The home side did not get their campaign off to the brightest of starts with a 3-14 to 1-13 loss. The other side of the group saw 2019 Div. 1 Finalist St Martins KK take on Wexford Intermediate Champions Cloughbawn. The Model County side carried their good form into the new year and ran out convincing winners 2-18 to 1-08. Round 2 will be make or break for both Kilkenny sides with Blacks & Whites and St Martins taking on Cloughbawn and Shinrone respectively.
In Group 2 the 2019 Div. 1 Champions Mullinavat of Kilkenny began their title defence away to Glynn Barntown of Wexford. The away side overcame the journey and conditions to walk away with a 3 point win as it finished 2-07 to 1-13. Another Kilkenny Wexford clash took place on the other side of the draw, with St Martins WX taking on John Lockes KK. The Wexford men proved far too strong as the romped to a 15 point victory. Round 2 here will see the heavyweight clash of Mullinavat and St Martins, while John Lockes host Glynn Barntown.
Group 3 lost one of its games, with Camross LS and Kilcormac Killoughey OY having to reschedule due to a local bereavement. This left Coolderry welcoming St Vincents D to Offaly. The home side flexed their muscles as they bagged 3 goals on the way to a big win. The final score was 3-13 to 0-07.
Group 4 also lost one of its games with Shelmaliers WX and St Oliver Plunketts D rescheduling for tomorrow night at 8pm in Shelmaliers. The other Group game saw Fethard St Mogues of Wexford welcome Glenmore across the border. The Kilkenny side emerging narrow victors here with a 2 point win.
Division 1 has kicked off nicely with some big results and some interesting 2nd Round fixtures to come as a result.
Division 2 did not fair as well as its higher counter part when it came to fixture completion. Out of a possible 8 games only 2 original fixtures survived the elements. Groups 1 2 and 3 saw no game played at all with one game from said group 3 re-fixed for tonight.
Group 4 saw both games take place with the clashes of Ballygarrett Realt na Mara WX against Kilmacow KK and Blackwater WX of Wexford taking on Laoiss Eire Og., Corra Choill. In an unusual turn of events both sides played draws. Ballygarrett and Kilmacow finished 1-10 a piece while Blackwather and Eire Og ended 1-13 to 2-10. This leaves us non the wiser as to how the group will turn out with all sides now facing into must win games in Round 2.
Division 3 saw 10 out of the 12 teams tasting action this weekend. In Group 1 Ringtown WH faced off against The Harps LS with the visitors proving far too strong. it finished up 5-20 to 0-08. In the other side of the group Eire Og Greystones WW took on Carrig & Riverstown OY with the Faithful County side emerging 7 point victors, 0-10 to 1-14.
Group 2 saw Leixlip KE succumb to a strong Duffry Rovers WX side 2-19 to 0-09, while St Patricks WW overcame Davidstown Courtnacuddy 0-20 to 1-11. The 2 unbeaten sides will put the records on the line in Round 2 as St Pats travel to Wexford, while Leixlip and Davidstown will look to get off the mark against one another.
Group 3 lost the clash of Kilrush/Askamore WX and Confey KE while Craanford WX welcomed the visit of Cloneen KK. Here the home side again emerged victorious with 6 points to spare. The lost Round 1 clash here has been rescheduled for Sat 7th March.
In Divison 4 conditions played a similarly significant role as only 1 game survived the weekend. That was the Group 2 clash of St Fechins LH and Arklow Rocks Parnells WW. The Wicklow side showed excellent earlier form as they fired home 5 goals on the way to a comfortable 13 point win.
