Fly a flag in support of frontline workers

Young people are being asked to show their colours in a new campaign to fly a flag in support of frontline workers in the battle against Covid-19.

Theinitiative is being spearheaded by all of the major teacher bodies and is calling on young people to put club, county or any sporting colours they like up in their homes as a public display of gratitude for the efforts of the medical community and other essential frontline services in the fight against coronavirus.

One of those driving the initiative is Kilcormac Killoughey GAA man, Damian White, who is current President of the Irish Primary Principals Network.

This is a chance for children to express their gratitude for frontline workers, he explained.

The vast majority of children are sports fans and we want them to bring out their flags and their colours and to show them off in the window or on the gate post or the front of the house in an appreciation and a demonstration of support for what is being done to fight the virus.

The children are cooped up at home - but they can still show their support. The colours can be club, county, their favourite team it doesnt matter what sport. If they dont have colours they can draw a flag or design a flag and put it on view, he added.

Its hoped that in the coming days and weeks the uncertainty and gloom of these days will be pushed back by an explosion of colour as young people all over Ireland fly their flag and show their colours off in support.

Damian added: Across the country, children are coming to a new realisation that heroes come in many forms and that many of them in fact are in their own homes. In the face of the Global COVID-19 pandemic, these heroes are their parents, cousins, neighbours and friends who are spending long hours day and night, fighting to ensure that this virus is controlled, and lives are protected.

The IPPN, INTO, NAPD, TUI and ASTI are proposing that as a show of support for those workers and volunteers on frontlines at this critical time, all children who have a flag in their county or club colours, or whatever team they follow across any code, would hang that flag from their gate posts, windows, or wherever they would normally placed a flag when supporting their county, club or team ahead of an important match.

While sports events at the moment are currently postponed, such a show of solidarity from the children of the country towards those on the frontline will demonstrate our gratitude for their marvellous dedication to their critical work at this extraordinary time. Hanging out the flags will also provide colour to lift everybody at a time when people are psychologically feeling the effects of this terrible pandemic.

We are asking all education agencies and sports organisations to support the initiative and to use their communication platformsto share this information with members.

We hope that in the coming days every road, street , lane , avenue, estate and apartment complex will be festooned with colour to honour our Heroes- our families, neighbours and friends in the frontline services.
