All-Ireland SFC Qualifier: Derry too strong for Waterford

All-Ireland SFC Qualifier: Derry too strong for Waterford

All-Ireland SFC Qualifier Round 1A

DERRY 1-17 WATERFORD 0-13

By Daragh O'Conchuir at Fraher Field.

A Danny Heavron goal in the 50th minute finally gave Derry some breathing space from a persistent Waterford as they progressed to the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers with a seven-point win at Fraher Field.

Waterford were well in contention at the interval, trailing by just 0-11 to 0-9, but they went 23 minutes without a score in the second half and found themselves 10 points in arrears until Donie Breathnach finally got them going.

They performed better from that then on, with Tommy Prendergast and Paul Whyte also getting on the board, but they needed a goal and Gavin Crotty just failed to get a touch to a through ball as Derry goalkeeper Ben McKinless advanced.

Damien Bartons men were comfortable however and Emmet McGuckin, the excellent Ciarn McFaul, Chrissy McKaigue, Heavron, Tallon and Mark Lynch scored good points.

They shot some horrendous wides too though and registered 16 by the time the final whistle had blown.

The Oak Leafers flew out of the traps thanks to a brace of points from Niall OLoughlin, and one each by Tallon and McFaul.

But Waterford began to settle and found plenty of joy with runners getting in behind the Derry cover. Crotty scored three points from play in the first half, Prendergast another and Breathnach landed three frees.

Prendergast might have gone for goal but as the sides went in at half-time but the hosts would have been pleased to follow up their excellent effort against Cork with a performance.

Prospects of a first qualifier win since 2011 eroded quickly however. Derry returned to the control that categorised their opening salvo in the first half, their power guaranteeing them primary possession and finding space despite Waterford dropping 13 and sometimes 14 players deep.

McGuckin was introduced during the change of ends and fired inches over within seconds of the resumption. McFaul and McKaigue followed and when Heavron thumped gleefully beyond Stephen Enright, after Karl McKaigue had attracted three Waterford defenders before timing his hand pass perfectly, it was all over.

Scorers for Derry: D Heavron 1-1, D Tallon 0-3, J Kielt 0-3 2f, C McFaul 0-2, N O'Loughlin 0-2 1f, R Bell 0-2, C McKaigue 0-1, E McGuckin 0-1, M Lynch 0-1, N Keenan 0-1.

Scorers for Waterford: D Breathnach 0-5 3f, G Crotty 0-3, F Cuirrn 0-2, T Prendergast 0-2, P Whyte 0-1.

From an Irish ex pat - thoughts on Brexit and BBC bias

From an Irish ex pat - thoughts on Brexit and BBC bias

Letter to Editor 31/01/2020 Hello good people. I am a Brit ex pat, presently resident in Brasil, where sadly Guinness is hard to come by. (hee hee) Born of Ulsterman Father and Dublin born Mother. Mixed religion. Aged 63 I witnessed many of the 'Troubles' in the North. I used to spend my school summer holidays on my Uncles farm in County Down. How times have changed. I too complained to the BBC about its' coverage of Brexit and its' so,so,so PRO remain stance. So much did I complain, I am now banned from complaining? The main reason the BBC banned me was

In November 2013 , Gardai issued a nationwide alert for a missing Roscommon woman and her three children . They were later found safe and well in Fermanagh . The Woman's name was Fiona Gregg . This is the last time Fiona would be together with her children as a family . Here is Fiona's full story in her own words . I moved to county Roscommon in 2008 as a lone parent with two of my children. I qualified as an EMT but shortly after that I got ill with gallstones. When the doctor advised me I'd need to have my gall bladder removed, I

Events in France - a French Perspective

Events in France - a French Perspective

Letter to Editor 03/12/2018 As a French native living in Ireland for twelve years, I feel the information given to Irish people about the situation in France is incorrect, or biased. The root cause of the problems as stated in many Irish papers come from Macron’s politics and rises in petrol tax. But if it were only that, the French would cope with it. In fact they endured more than that in the last twenty years, much more. But the French are practical and they tighten their belt as much as they could, until the last few weeks. What the governments did to the citizens is the

Abortion : TDs Refuse Pain Relief for babies in late term abortions

Abortion : TDs Refuse Pain Relief for babies in late term abortions

Letter to Editor 02/12/2018 I feel disgusted and dismayed that our TD's rejected the few humane amendments that were put forward last week during the debates on the 'Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy 2018'. The mask has indeed slipped off to reveal one of the most barbaric abortion regimes in the world. Mattie McGrath TD asserted that we were 'LIED' to by the Health minister (Mr. Harris) as his promises did not come to fruition. TD Danny Healy-Rae said, 'We are speaking....about a matter of life and death and he (Mr. Harris) is laughing at us..and grinning'. He was not alone. Pro-abortion TD's sneered
