GAA Referee’s Awards Banquet

GAA Referee’s Awards Banquet

Sean Walsh, Chairman of National Referee Development Committee, paid tribute to the officials who were honoured with gold and silver awards at Croke Park on Saturday evening.

A new initiative the gold and silver awards recognise those who have refereed 50 gold and 25 silver Championship matches.

It was a great night for them and that we acknowledged what they have achieved, Walsh said about David Coldrick, Joe McQullian, Maurice Deegan Gaelic Football and Barry Kelly Hurling who have officiated in more than 50 Championship games.

Four referees got gold medals for refereeing 50 matches and it is nice to recognise that, to let people know how many matches they have done, Walsh remarked. Also those that got to 25, that part went very well, we were delighted with it.

We had a beautiful night, it was a night of celebration for the referees, we are delighted it went well, it was a great night entertainment wise and it was a great night of celebration for everybody involved.

We had 14 referees who have recently retired from the inter-county panel, they were acknowledged and received a presentation from the Uachtarn.

We also had the five All Ireland referees receiving their medals from 2015 and 2016, David Coldrick and James Owens from 2015 and Brian Gavin, Conor Lane, and Maurice Deegan from this year.

The GAA also honoured Pat Dunphy and Willie Walsh, the referees in the 1916 All Ireland Finals and Harry Boland, who took charge of the 1914 football decider and replay.

It was a very, very special night for the families of the Hall of Fame recipients, Walsh commented. We had representatives of Harry Boland, who refereed the 1914 All Ireland Football Final and replay, he was involved in the Civil War and was shot in 1922.

We had representatives from Pat Dunphy from Laois' family, he refereed the 1916 Football Final, he refereed six All Ireland Finals.

Then we had Willie Walsh, who refereed the 1916 Hurling Final, he refereed nine All Irelands seven in hurling and two in football. That made for a very good night.
