Kilkenny Champs Shock Celbridge In Club IHC Final

AIB Leinster GAA Club Intermediate Hurling Championship Final: Carrickshock Kilkenny 3-12, Celbridge Kildare 1-16

We could be on Crimecall next week, a Carrickshock player joked to a couple of his team-mates after their incredible snatch-and-grab raid stunned Celbridge at St Conleths Park.

The Kilkenny club claimed the AIB Leinster Club IHC title afteran amazing comeback. Trailing by six points with less than five minutes remaining, Carrickshock stormed back into contention whenJohn Dalton found space andshot to the corner of the net. Each side then added a point before wing forward Kevin Farrell brought the sides level with a super goal in injury-time.

But Celbridges inspirational forward Gerry Keeganslotted over histenth point of the hour to edge the Kildare side ahead once more and it appeared that the title they sought for so long was still in their grasp.

But the drama wasnt over yet as Carrickshock substitute Michael Rohanscored their third goal with almost the last puck of the game.

Rohans strike brought a sensational conclusion to a rip-roaring contest which Celbridge looked set to win for most of the hour.

Beaten in the provincial finals of 2010 and 2011 and semi-finalists in 2009 and 2013, no-one would have begrudged the Lilywhites a first Leinster success.

Instead, Carrickshock regained the title they won once previously in 2004 and will now represent Leinster in the All-Ireland series.

Celbridge had started promisingly, with a fourth minute goal from Thomas Fitzgerald helping them to a 1-2 to 0-0 lead.

With Gerry Keeganshowing what he is capable ofin their attack and county footballer Fergal Conway floating over a couple of magnificent scores, Celbridge still led by five points 1-7 to 0-5 after 22 minutes.

Carrickshock had the industrious Kevin Farrell to thank for most of their positive early hurling, and his scores, together with a 65 from John Power and another effort from play by John Butler cut their deficit to three points at the interval: 1-9 to 0-9.
