In 1988 , the Irish Soccer Team under Jack Charlton qualified for their FIRST EVER
The team topped their qualifying group and prepared for their first ever European Championship Finals in West Germany where they would meet England , the Soviet Union and the Netherlands.
Their first game was against England in Stuttgart . They beat England 1-0 with an amazing header by Ray Houghton after six minutes
. They went onto draw 1-1 with the Soviet Union in Hanover before losing to the Netherlands in Gelsenkirchen . They finished third in the group ahead of England who finished last .
Two years later , Big Jack would take the Irish Soccer team to new heights not only qualifying for their first ever world cup finals but going all the way to the Quarter Finals of Italia '90 after beating Romania 5-4 in a tense penalty shoot out second round match . Their quarter final match against the home side Italy would end in heartbreak after Italy's top goal scorer Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci (winner of the golden boot) sealed Italys place in the Semi Final after 38 mins with the only goal of the match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
