Statistics from the office of the refugee applications commissioner (now called the international protection office) show that between 2001 to 2016 out of 54,000 asylum applications only 8% were deemed genuine refugees following face to face interviews with applicants . The top Countries of origin for asylum seekers entering Ireland in 2018 and 2019 are Albania and Georgia . There are no wars in any of these countries and many people believe that the money being used on opening new hotels to accomodate such people who are by and large not genuine refugees should be spent on more worthy causes such as helping the homeless and improving our health system etc .
