Racism against Irish - Racist Incident against Irish man in Galway, in May 2019
I would like to report a racist incident in Doughiska, Galway city which occurred on Sunday 26 May 2019. A gang of teenagers have been hanging around Joyces supermarket located in Doughiska, and harassing, intimidating, slandering and threatening, customers going into and out of Joyces supermarket. Most of this teenage gang are of African descent and one was of Asian descent. Joyces supermarket is located 4 miles outside Galway city, details here at https://www.google.com/search?q=joyces+supermarket+doughiska&rlz=1C1GCEA_enIE828IE828&oq=joyces+supermarket+doughiska&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l2.8671j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
On Sunday 26 May this gang racially abused a man going in to do some shopping in Joyces Supermarket. One member of the gang aggressively stared at and then called the man a “faggot” and then he started inciting hatred against the man among other members of the gang. This was a homophobic comment and deeply insulting to the man who is not a homosexual. Other members of the gang started talking about and intimidating the man while he was in doing his shopping. This included several gang members aggressively staring at the man through the open door of the shop. This was very threatening and intimidating to the man as there were ten youths in the gang. The man asked the leader of the gang “did he want something’, the leader of the gang aggressively shouted back ‘ do you want a problem ?’ in a very threatening manner. There were 10 members of the gang, all the gang were big, some the size of grown men. The gang became very menacing and some members of the gang came into the shop to put him under observation. The man felt threatened and asked the shop manager to ring the Gardai and ask them to come in a squad car. He did this. The man waited for the gardai to come. He waited a while and then decided to go back home briefly to leave his transport and luggage back home and return back to the shop in a few minutes to meet Gardai. He went outside the shop and was surrounded by the gang. They became very aggressive and threatening to the man as they knew he had asked the shop manager to call the gardai. The man told the gang he wanted no trouble and that the gardai had been called and the gardai would resolve this issue. One of the gang members threatened to hit the man and the gang moved in around the man in a menacing manner. The man was outnumbered 10 to 1 and was in fear of his life. Another member of the gang called the man a paedophile and that he had heard that that rumour about him. This was slander and abusive and threatening behavior against the man, both criminal offences . The man responded by saying that he treated people with respect and expected the same from others, and they were treating him with disrespect and that this was unacceptable. They started shouting at the man and putting him in fear of his life.
The man walked off and the gang shouted insults and nasty abuse at him. The man felt that he was picked on because he was Irish and that this was a racist incident. There a racist element to this abuse. He walked half way home and then returned to the shop to update the shop manager of the harassment of a him just outside the shop. The manger rang the gardai again and the man also rang the gardai. While waiting for the gardai, members of the gang continued to come in and out of the shop for the sole purpose of putting g the man under observation. More intimidation. The shop manager said that that this gang had caused trouble for many customers in the past and that the gardai had been called in the past to deal with them. Despite this reporting of criminal activity to gardai in the past, this gang are continuing to cause trouble for people. The gardai arrived after 20 minutes and the man reported the incident to the gardai who wrote down the details. The gardai are based in Oranmore. A statement to gardai has been made in relation to this racist incident. The man has also contacted his lawyers and will be instructing them to take legal actions. There have been breaches of a number of laws including the 1997 Harassment act, and the use of threatening or abusive behaviour in a public place and incitement to hatred. The gardai will also be bringing this matter to court.
