A Little Good News & Common Sense in these testing times
Back in 1983, a song sung by Anne Murray made it’s way into both the top of the charts of the time, and in to our collective hearts. The song title is: A Little Good News . But most people will remember the chorus / words “We sure could use a little good news today”, even today 37 years on, the song is still regularly played on radio along with the more mellow of the TV music stations.
In the past week, I have played “A little good news” many times, from the album (yes Vinyl LP) of the same name, which is one of my favourites. Maybe it is some kind of subconscious need to hear the words "A little good news " that is driving me to pick up this album and play only this one song.
Honestly, I do not know, but it gave me the idea to write about the Little Good News we have or hear about and to recognise the Heroes who despite risk to themselves, still go on helping others!.
As Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is working it’s way through the population of nation after nation and the death toll world wide appears to grow vastly day to day. I felt we need good news!. I also will admit to a little self indulgence at the same time, Please forgive me this.
Good News as our heroes return home
Many of our great people are returning to Ireland with the single purpose of assisting Irish medics to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Most will feel conflict between loyalty to their people & country of birth and loyalty to the people of the country they have chosen to live and work in. Yet, still unselfishly they return, a new flock of geese, this time returning to Ireland. Heroes ALL!.

President JFK : Ask not what...... Ask what you can do......
It was US President John F. Kennedy in his Inaugural Address, which took place on Friday, January 20, 1961 in Washington, D.C., who famously said: "Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You" “Ask what you can do for your country”.
Now, almost 60 years after that famous Inaugural address, his words like many, many times since, echo through the annals of time and have given renewed hope to each generation since. Perhaps President JFK’s words are more relevant today, to many more people world wide, than at any time since they were first spoken.
Just a little Common Sense & decency goes a long way!
Common sense, my Father used to say: “Is something often spoken of, but rarely witnessed or practised”. Now of course, this statement was most often directed at me, when as a teenager, I would turn up with a freshly pierced earlobe or blonde streaked hair in combination with a black beard. As a teen in the late ‘70 and early 1980’s, my thoughts were directed more towards impressing some young woman, when choosing my hair cut / colour or the latest pair of jeans. Nevertheless, my Father (RIP) was absolutely convinced that my every movement, gesture, utterance or clothing choice was designed and perfectly constructed to annoy him and drive him mad. I find myself often wondering what he would make of Ireland today. You see he was a hard man, hard as nails (as the saying goes). An ex-Soldier formerly of the of engineers, a Patriot, and someone who loved his time as a member of the Irish armed forces. He loved his country and firmly believed in God, Country, Family and Duty.
Beyond doubt, Fathers and Sons & Mothers and Daughters, have always had generational issues. Every generation sees the younger one as losing all reality (sometimes with justification). The two things that all generations could jointly & with pride claim ownership of, was the preservation of decency and common sense. Sadly, today both are clearly in very short supply. As proven by this recent post here on thetricolour.com .
As people worldwide lose their fight with Covid-19 and what is left of the family structure becomes even more under threat. A Sinn Fein Senator advises people to EXPLORE "phone sex,cam sex, watching porn" during the Covid-19 Crisis. No it’s not a joke!.
Also, Only days previous to this lip service to depravity, people before profit Seanad Candidate Ruth Coppinger confirmed her colleague Mick Barry is to place amendments to The Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (Covid-19) Bill 2020 aimed at facilitating abortions through telemedicine. Still Not just a joke!
Then this from The Minister for Health
Minister for Health, Simon Harris says the abortion pill can be given by Skype consultation. Minister Harris told the Dail that the current legislation providing for abortion services did not preclude abortion pills being prescribed by video conferencing. (Source: Gript.ie)
Despite all of the above mentioned, I managed to find what amounts to absolute Common Sense & Decency!.
Though working very long hours along side her fellow medics in an effort to save as many people as possible, who are currently hospitalised with the Covid-19 virus. One young Doctor takes the time where possible between 12 to 18 hour shifts, to make YouTube videos in the hope of reaching those not infected & advising on how to carry out daily tasks as safely as is possible, while at the same time also doing all possible to reassure folk.

Some might remember seeing shocking footage of middle aged women fighting over Toilet paper / rolls. The images made it initially to YouTube and then via some news channels it came across the water to the UK and Europe. Georgia speaks about the harm that such behaviour does to society, advises against panic buying, even going as far as reading out a letter from one of her colleagues, a Doctor and Infectious Disease Specialist!.
WARNING! During the video foul language / swearing can be heard loudly & clearly, which is part of the footage showing the women fighting over toilet rolls. It begins at 0:28 and ends around 1:30 . I mention this just in case you are watching with children in your immediate vicinity.

Some more Good News
The chief medical officers in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will sign a Memorandum of Understanding formalising co-ordination and cooperation between the Irish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive this week. It comes as Tánaiste Simon Coveney held a teleconference with the Northern Ireland Secretary of State Brandon Lewis and Stormont's leaders to discuss ongoing cooperation to deal with the coronavirus. In a statement following the meeting, Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said the Covid-19 pandemic "does not respect borders".She added:"Co-operation and common action across our island is vital at this time”. "Protection of the lives and welfare of everyone on the island is paramount, and no effort will be spared in that objective”."Working closely together, the two chief medical officers will sign a memorandum of Understanding formalising co-ordination and cooperation between the Irish Government and the Executive this week." Yesterday, Arlene Foster and Ms O'Neill acknowledged they are at odds on certain coronavirus issues, but insisted they are united on the main goal, that of saving lives. (Source: RTE )
More Good News from Ireland & abroad! O'Neill's making Scrubs, Pants and Masks
O’Neill’s turns their hands to making SCRUBS & Face Masks for the NHS. As other factories fall silent due to the coronavirus, the din of production continues at O'Neills sportswear factory in Northern Ireland, where staff have pivoted to making scrubs and face masks for besieged healthcare workers. "You always feel proud of your product" business development manager Orla Ward told AFP..."But this is just on another level because you really are getting it to the people that need it most at this really critical time." Around 750 staff at the factory in Strabane, which makes kits and leisurewear primarily for Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) sports, were temporarily laid off as the COVID-19 crisis unfolded.
Teams and groups playing GAA sports -- such as hurling and Gaelic football -- began to postpone events and matches as the British and Irish governments restricted gatherings in a bid to stem infections."The managing director had been speaking to people here in the local hospital and realised that they were in desperate need of scrubs" said Ward. Ranks of the skilled machinist staff were back at their stations on Thursday, separated from each other under "social distancing" guidelines designed to slow the spread of the virus. Production began at the O'Neills Strabane location on Wednesday after the fabrics were dyed, given antibacterial treatment and shipped from Dublin, where the firm is headquartered. The Strabane factory is currently working to meet an order of 5,000 scrubs, consisting of a set of trousers, a top and a mask. Doctor stopped for speeding: But Officer shows true meaning of “To Serve & Protect”!
In The US: Dr. Sarosh Ashraf Janjua was pulled over on I-35 this past weekend for driving above the speed limit. When Trooper Brian Schwartz saw her Massachusetts driver's license, he asked her what she was doing all the way out in Minnesota... "I told him I travel here every month for my work as a locums cardiologist," Janjua said .Schwartz went back to his patrol car and Janjua was fully expecting a ticket..."He went back to his patrol car to look up my license, and when he returned, quite firmly told me it was very irresponsible of me to be speeding, especially since I would not only take up resources if I got into an accident, but would also not be in a position to help patients," Janjua said.
"Instead of giving a speeding ticket he told me he was going to let me off with a warning. As I sputtered to apologize and say thank you, he reached in to hand me what I assumed was my license back. It wasn’t until my hand had closed around what he was giving me that its unexpected bulkiness drew my eyes to it." Trooper Schwartz handed Janjua five N95 masks, from the supply the state had given him for his protection."I burst into tears. And though it may just have been the cold wind, but I think he teared up a little as well, before wishing me well and walking away" - Janjua said .. "This complete stranger, who owed me nothing and is more on the front lines than I am, shared his precious masks with me, without my even asking" . Like millions of health care workers across the world, Janjua said she was "afraid" of not having proper equipment to protect herself from possibly getting sick far from home. "The veil of civilization may be thin, but not all that lies behind it is savage" Janjua said. "We are going to be ok."
A 4 year old missing for 2 days: Found safe and well in the woods with her dog by her side
A little girl called Vadie Sides went missing for two days in the woods. Vadie disappeared from her babysitter's sight Wednesday afternoon while they were walking in a backyard with a hound dog. The local Sheriff’s department searched the woods for two days !Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said searchers found Vadie Sides after two days of searching the woods, she was found unharmed and in good spirits. A member of the search team that found the girl told media outlet WRBL-TV that they were searching the woods when they “heard a dog bark”, and then the girl "popped her head up" and they saw her bright red hair. "I slept by a road on, the first night," Vadie said, "and the second night I slept where they found me. "
"I do not have enough words to express the proper gratitude to all of our community that came out to help us find this little angel," - Vadie's mother Amanda Sides wrote on Facebook .. "Jay Jones, Jimmy Taylor, and the rest of the Lee County Sheriff's Department, Lee County, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Auburn PD, Opelika PD, Air Force National Guard, Macon County Sheriff's Department.... the list goes on and on”. Thank you all so much. We have been overwhelmed by the unending unbelievable support we've gotten from this community. Also Thanks, to the people who kept me alive, force fed me water and chicken broth, searched the woods endlessly, and basically lived at Nanny's house until she was found.I will probably never be able to thank you all enough. To all of the volunteers who came out in the middle of a global pandemic to traipse around in the woods, sometimes into the early morning hours.“To Anyone I've forgotten” just know that you are loved and we are incredibly grateful.“We have been on an emotional roller coaster the last few days, and today I'm finally starting to breathe normally again." .. “God Bless you all” Vadie's mother Amanda Sides wrote on Facebook.
The final piece of Good News – for now ! 2 friends raise thousands to buy i-pads for nursing homes, so residents can Face Time with Family
Since most nursing homes are no longer allowing visitors due to the Coronavirus outbreak, it has become difficult for senior residents to stay connected to their families. That's why friends Jill Ashworth Valadao and Sarah Otis Firth launched "Face Time for Nana". Firth, who lives in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, said she was browsing her newsfeed on Facebook when a photo made her cry. An adult daughter was standing outside the window of her mother's room at a nursing home, holding a white board as her only means of communication."I thought these poor people in the nursing homes; they're so scared and isolated. I wish I could get a bunch of i-Pads to give to them," she said.
Firth reached out to her friend, Jill Valadao, to see if she was interested in starting a fundraiser together to buy iPads for nursing homes so the residents could use Face Time to chat with family and friends.Valadao jumped at the opportunity to help. She created the Facebook fundraiser page "FaceTime for Nana"on March 17 with a goal of $300, enough to purchase one iPad. As of Saturday morning, Firth and Valadao had raised nearly $5,000. The first three iPads were carefully delivered by Firth and Valadao Friday morning to Autumn Glen's memory unit in Dartmouth and Alden Court Nursing Care and Royal of Fairhaven Nursing Center in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.Later that day Firth got a message from Alden Court activity director Sharon Jensen thanking them on behalf of the residents and staff for the new iPad.
The message read:"During such a difficult time, these sweet gestures literally make the residents days”. Yesterday more than 75 face time calls were made to families at Alden. This process has kept our families connected and reassured that their loved one is safe and content. The residents get a kick out of the technology and share a few laughs / smiles when they see their loved one on the Ipads.“Our goal is to find positive things to keep the resident spirits up and this is one of the many good things happening”.Today, the residents and the staff will be receiving performances from local young performers donating their time and their talents to present mini concerts for the residents VIA FACE TIME. “The i-pad gift was a blessing today. So thank you Sarah for thinking of Alden Court."
Well, that’s all folks!
Genuinely, I hope that the mixture of Good News, Videos and messages here on thetricolour.com, have even if only in some small way, managed to brighten up your day. Remember, even at times as bleak as we are collectively experiencing, there is always Hope!. Try to keep in the back of your mind the absolute FACT, that the Covid-19 outbreak will one day be nothing more than a memory. Please, Pray for those we have already lost and for those currently fighting the virus. Remember to keep a few moments of prayer, for those Heroes on the front line, who on a daily basis get out of bed, their only consideration being to help OTHERS !. MAY GOD BLESS & PROTECT ALL who wake each morning during this dreadful time and unselfishly get themselves ready to work for this great country and her people.
