At the time of the Famine there was no humanitarian aid like there is today ...

Charlie
politics

The establishment of Aid Agencies and Charities in the 1960s has made it possible for people living in areas striken by famine and natural disasters to remain in their homelands. Sadly , This was not the case during the Irish Famine .

1840s Ireland was a different world to today . With no humanitarian aid agencies , no food and nobody to help , reluctant to leave but with no alternative many Irish jumped on the coffin ships and sailed to their closest neighbouring country to the west , Canada and America .

This was the world in the 1840s and 1850s .

Nowadays , the world is a different place .

The 1960s saw the establishment of the first humanitarian aid agencies .

Concern was established in 1968 to help the war torn people of Biafra , followed by Trocaire established in 1973 to help the flood victims of Bangladesh , followed by Goal in 1977 established to help the people of Calcutta . In the 1980s , in response to disasters around the world , such as the famine in Ethiopia , Celebrities such as Bob Geldof in conjunction with the Media and Governments began to mobilize people around the world to donate money and time to helping charities and victims of famine and war etc.

This Aid made it possible for those people to remain at home close to their loved ones and to hand on their culture and traditions to the next generation .

Irish starving,Irish children living in poverty, homeless crisis.1840 no 2016.Our government and media are telling us we are doing well.Me arse, stuck in debt, dying currency, ruled by the EU monarchy of Queen Merkel and her cabinet of criminals. The thing about history is it just keeps repeating itself because the human race stopped having original ideas a long time ago.If we are asked to keep accepting this replacement population,I say stick them.Irish went away to work and got treated like dirt.Immigrants come to Ireland, most sit on their hole or open a shop for their own and get treated like royalty. If you can afford to get to Europe via human trafficking gangs, then you weren't starving. The real refugees are still fighting for their countries or in Turkey or Jordan, not sitting around Ireland and Europe drinking coffee and moaning about the weather. Please start pestering td's and local council clowns about these issues, they really are puppets,be the one pulling the strings not the audience.Quick word on Gob Beldof, it was Midge Ure's idea,he just hijacked it,made a fortune and everyone forgot his career was dead before band aid.Shame the sword didn't slip during his knighthood and cut his cabbage head off.Gob Beldofs head 28 pounds of useless fat.

This is a very good point .

I have seen a number of articles in the Irish Times likening the migrant crisis to irish emigration during the famine.

clearly , they are not the same , if the people of Ireland had the humanitarian aid available to them like the countries in Africa do today , very few would have chosen to board ships for America and Canada .

I also like the point about America being are closest neighbouring country to the west , because this is important , migrants are supposed to seek asylum in their closest neighbouring countries , not traveling have way around the world to whatever country happens to have the best welfare or economy .

if they get this bill through , we may as well pack our bags this is the same party that voted Against flying the Irish Flag outside Fingal County Hall . remember that , that guy matthew waine solidarity pbp wanted the Red Flag of communism instead because he said the irish flag was offensive to minorities . This is what your dealing with now . There is a very thin line between socialism and communism and I think these guys are communists deep down

i guess this is the governments way of punishing Galway for Oughterard .They are putting their foot down and saying to galway that resistance is futile , we dont care what you think , we'll put direct provision centres anywhere and everywhere we like and nobody can stop us . thats basically the message thats coming out of this move.

Nigeria is a Safe country with 6 million Tourists a year , why is the government spending all our taxes on asylum seekers , most of these people are only pretending to be refugees . There's definitely a racial agenda to this , in the first 3 years of the 1990s less than 100 people a year claimed asylum in Ireland . On 1 Novemeber 1993 , The Treaty on European Union came into force . Two years later , thousands of asylum seekers started to arrive in Ireland from Nigeria . This had to be ORGANISED . Somebody was organising these people to come to Ireland . AND WHY ? thats the big question . It all goes back to the vision of a man name Richard Kalergi , a foun
