A caller to the Niall Boylan show that worked in the Asylum System in Ireland for 18 years has said the system is being abused and says only a very small number of the people he saw were genuine asylum seekers The amount of abuse I've seen in 18 years is unbelievable . people who have actually claimed asylum in other countries come to Ireland because we've the easiest system in the world . The caller says that during the period when Ireland had birthright citizenship , heavily pregnant women were arriving from the Airport , one person even gave birth in the office .

Department of Justice to introduce new Hate Speech Laws
The Department of Justice has announced plans to introduce new hate speech laws in Ireland next year and has invited people who have witnessed or experienced hate speech to make anonomous submissions via an online survey as part of the consultation process before the closing date of 13th December 2019 .

Under existing Legislation - The Prohibition of Incitement To Hatred Act 1989  . It is already an offence in Ireland to "stir up hatred" . Section 2 of the Act says : "It is an offence for a person to publish or distribute written material , or to use words, behave or display written material in any place other than a private residence or to distribute, show or play a recording of visual images or sounds if they are threatening, abusive or insulting and are intended or, having regard to all the circumstances, are likely to stir up hatred"

The proposed law changes have led to concerns among proponents of free speech who say the laws will be used to silence debate on certain issues and give privileges to certain groups in society .

Reacting to the proposed new laws , Hermann Kelly of the Irish Freedom Party said :

what they're doing is attacking freedom of speech , Ireland already has very strong laws against defamation and incitement to violence , what charlie flanagan and the dep justice are discussing is giving certain groups privileges , they dont want equality before the law , they want certain groups who they choose have privileges before the law and they want to shut down freedom of speech , they want to shut down debate on certain issues , they want to enforce a silencing of the people . Through this legislation they want to give certain groups privileges and silence other groups with whom they disagree

Others are concerned that Ireland will follow the same path as Britain where in
2016,  police arrested 3,300 people for using inappropriate language on social media which included acts of misgendering Trans people .

Earlier this year the UK Telegraph reported on how Police in Surrey threatened to arrest journalist Caroline Farrow if she didn't appear at her local police station to be interviewed under caution for the act of "mis-gendering" a trans women, i.e. referring to them as ‘he’ rather than ‘she’ .

The same paper previously reported on the case of a teacher who was told by police she had committed a hate crime for refusing to refer to a transgender pupil who identified as a boy as "he" or "him"  . The case was taken against the teacher by the Mermaids Charity which represents transgender children . Its CEO susie green contacted police who contacted the Crown Prosecution Service who agreed it was a hate crime.

Also reported on was the case of Irish Comedian Graham Linehan who was issued a verbal harassment warning by West Yorkshire Police for misgendering a trans activist on Twitter .

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been very critical of the laws . In a column for The Daily Telegraph, he said the UK .. "needs a campaign for the right to make jokes and the right, within the law, to be satirical to the point of causing mild offence; because it is when you endlessly shush people up, and stifle debate, that extremism flourishes" . The comments followed a Joke he had made in which he said Muslim women who wear a face veil resemble "letter boxes" for which he was strongly castigated .

Back in Ireland , a Student led movement dedicated to free speech , 'Free Speech Ireland' and 'Students for Liberty' says it intends to Fight the proposed laws , On Monday , the organisation held a meeting at University College Cork "the state vs the people" where it discussed the implications of new hate speech laws on Ireland .

Other Student led movements have also expressed their concern at the proposed changes including the Classical Liberal Society at Trinity College Dublin .

one persons hate speech is another persons opinion. speaking strongly on an issue thats close to your heart shouldn't be illegal
^
there is no doubt now that ireland is heading for a communist state where dissenting voices are punished and the state controls everything . Free speech is a vital part of every civilised society and modern democracy . we are now moving backwards in my opinion.
^
I think the minister is trying to fastrack this to prevent people objecting to direct provision centers , any opposition will be called out as hate speech and the cosy cartel can continue to impose their far left politics on Ireland .
^
this is ridiculous . If you hurt another persons feelings you can be charged for hate speech or if your opinion annoys them you can be charged for hate speech too . They just want to silence people from expressing their opinions on taboo issues . Its censorship

a discussion on all of these issues is long overdue . a mature conversation needs to happen . we used to have good debates in Ireland up to about 20 years ago , until debating an issue became a crime almost , a thought crime anyway.
