Martin Kenny - Views of Older People "isn't relevant to new Ireland"
Speaking to Fiach Kelly and Harry McGee of the Irish Times , Martin Kenny , Sinn Fein TD for Sligo/Leitrim says older people's views are not 'relevant to the new Ireland' , we have to be 'inclusive and tolerant' .
He explains :
In the debate around Marriage Equality and the 8th amendment it was young people that convinced their parents and their grandparents and their uncles and aunts and older people that you know the views you learned when you went to school in the 60s and 70s isn't relevant to the new Ireland and we have to look at a different place and be inclusive and be tolerant .
Kenny's speech raises a number of concerns about the kind of society we will live in under sinn fein .
Society should be "inclusive and tolerant" yet exclude the views of many people because of their age . Some might call that age discrimination .
What about the republican tradition . If the views of Older people are no longer relevant under sinn fein how can they pass down the republican tradition to their children . Indeed , would we even have the 26 Counties back .
In relation to abortion which began in communist Russia in the 1920s followed by Communist North Korea in the 1950s , probably two of the most backward and barbaric regimes in history . Should we proud to have it in Ireland . How does it make us a new Ireland , tolerant or inclusive when its an ancient practice which 'excludes' an innocent human being from ever entering the world .
Finally , in relation to tolerance , Is being tolerant turning a blind eye to Facts , the fact being that top 5 Countries of Origin for asylum seekers entering Ireland are SAFE Countries . Albania , Georgia , Zimbabwe , Nigeria and South Africa . We will spend 120 million this year on accommodation for these people while our own homeless freeze to death or are beaten to death like that poor man in Cork . Is that being 'inclusive' and 'tolerant' .
Is this really the kind of New Ireland any of us want to live in .
