Oughterard protests intensify as elderly man run over by van
Protests against a Direct Provision Centre in the town of Oughterard Galway have intensified this week with an elderly man reportedly run over by security on Tuesday. The man was rushed to hospital where he is in a stable condition . Reports of unmuzzled dogs being used by security and the presence of ex-Irish rangers on site has also been alleged .
At a public meeting held last Wednesday , Oughterard townsfolk voted by 654 votes to 14 against a local Hotel , (the Connemara Gateway) being used as a Direct Provision accommodation centre for asylum seekers .
Since then , a number of locals have held a round the clock vigil outside the Hotel which is currently undergoing refurbishment .
Last Month , A Department of Public Expenditure report "Direct Provision : Overview of current accommodation expenditure" indicated that upwards of €120 million would be spent this year on the Direct Provision System , up 50% on 2018 which itself was the highest since 2010.
According to the report , Ireland is experiencing "the highest level of net inward migration since 2008" and the rise in costs is largely due to a rapid growth in the number of asylum applicants , projected this year to be up 40% on 2018.
Figures released by the Reception and Integration Agency show that people from Zimbabwe , Nigeria , Pakistan , Albania and S Africa make up the top 5 nationalities currently living in Direct Provision to the end of November 2018 .

Figures released by the international protection office show there were 2,680 asylum applications lodged in Ireland between January and July this year compared to 1,949 applications for the same period last year, an overall increase of 37% . The top 5 Countries of origin for asylum seekers entering Ireland in 2019 are Albania , Georgia , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Nigeria .
