A Dad's Reply to Richie Sadlier

A Dad's Reply to Richie Sadlier
This piece was written by a Dad  who lost his child to abortion . He wrote it in reply to an article by Football pundit Richie Sadlier .

Hi Richie, First of all let me say I applaud you for being brave enough to pass an opinion on the 8th amendment. Just because you are a sportsman/pundit doesn’t mean you can’t voice an opinion.

Let me tell you about the last time I visited my GP. It was about a year ago & as I left, she looked at me, smiled and said ‘you are looking great everything seems good?’. I nodded, smiled and left.

Nine years earlier I had visited her, a broken man. The first day I saw her I cried and broke down, shaking. I had experienced my first ever panic attack that morning, I went to open the door of my car and thought I was having a heart attack. I doubled over in pain and vomited. The doctor had examined me and said ‘you look terrible. It looks to me to be as much mental as physical, has something traumatic happened in your life recently?’.

I hesitated but the last year had been torture. My then girlfriend had got pregnant, changed her mind and decided to abort our baby without telling me. Why? To this day I don’t know. How? Because it was relatively easy to hop on a plane and 24 hours later all was sorted….

I spent many years of my life unable to sleep, breathe or be normal. I’d stare out  the window on the loveliest sunny day and see a cesspit in front of me. I wasn’t able to interact with my friends. I had (what I now believe) to be a nervous breakdown. A thirty minute journey to work became torture. I couldn’t be alone, yet I wasn’t able to interact with people if there was someone with me. If any mention of abortion came on the radio my heart would thunder. Anxiety, stress, not eating for four days and then eating loads on the fifth. Did you see Joe Brolly on the late late show last week talking about how homeless people suffer from 2.30AM onwards due to the deadly quiet? Well same for me. The seconds of the clock would beat so loud that I thought I was going mad. I once woke and heard a baby crying in my house. I was alone, where was this coming from? I walked out the front door at 4AM & could hear the noise inside. It was me, it was me losing the plot. I’d try to sleep, I’d wake in terror.

You know the game we love, football? I was once on the sideline for my local team as a substitute. I looked down the line & there was an injured team mate approaching with a pram, his newborn daughter inside. I ran down the line to get away, I couldn’t look inside. I pretended to be warming up but I was trying not to cry. He had everything I wanted. Things got so bad that one Saturday I couldn’t get up. 5PM in the evening and no reason to get out of bed. Left hand side of my body stressed, feeling like the world itself was holding me down. My Dad phoned me out of the blue. Our team was playing on Sky Sports that evening & he invited me over to watch. Had he not I’d have remained in bed all day thinking about that baby.It took a lot of GP recommended counselling to fix things, but eventually after nine years I made peace with what happened. That is if you call intense counselling ‘Peace’. I would talk & talk going over with the Counsellor about how I felt responsible, how I should  have done this or that. Five years in and still the same things as when I first went to see the counsellor. I kept in contact with the lady who aborted our child. She had bled for three weeks after the termination. She received no counselling before or after the procedure. She suffered from alcohol problems afterwards and many others too, too deep to go into. She is a human being also and while I feel sick at what happened to our child, where was the love, compassion and care for her?

I know she is sorry for what happened. She later admitted she had wanted  the baby too but got ‘friendly advice’ from a few people, people who were not there afterwards. Then to our baby. No matter what the procedure, a growing child loses its life. So in this case, one person’s life was taken and two others were destroyed for a significant period.

You referred to this as ‘healthcare’ in your article. Well to me, healthcare here would have been significant counselling before the procedure, discussion of other options and actual physical care for the woman in question. Will this happen in Ireland, a country where Simon Harris has presided over the number of people on trolleys in our hospitals going above 700, a government where homeless figures are increasing alarmingly but the government’s focus is on a campaign to repeal the 8th amendment. I have no faith in them, I have no faith in British Abortion Services. I have faith in life, people being given the chance at life, people embracing life. It is beautiful.

You also mentioned that you don’t tie yourself in knots as to when life begins. You are a person. Your life began at some point. You helped teams to success, you liven up the shows where you are a pundit. Where did it all begin? You were given the chance to live. Someone, at least one person in this world thought you were worth bringing into this world. I’m glad they did because you’re a good bloke with a lot to offer society. In Britain this year up to 200,000 people will not be given the chance to live.

If you do feel like taking a balanced look at this topic before May 25th can you google two people: Emma Beck & Kermit Gosnell. Both of these tragic circumstances occurred in countries where abortion is legal. In my opinion once it is legal it is normalised and once it is normalised it becomes part of our daily lives. When I closed the door to talk to my GP nine years ago I told her I never thought I’d see a good day again. I now have a space in my garden in tribute to our lost child. I sometimes visit it on Sunny days & leave a flower or something nice just to remember how precious they were. I hope you, your family & friends never have to go through any of this. From a father who has experienced abortion & who will be voting to preserve the 8th amendment."
