Ballymun : Hotel which closed its doors to Homeless in 2021 now housing asylum seekers
Ballymun in dublin . Protest held as hotel which closed its doors to homeless now housing asylum seekers
There were angry scenes in Ballymun in North Dublin over the weekend as up to a thousand people gathered outside the Travelodge Hotel in Ballymun to protest the government's decision to use the facility as an accommodation centre for asylum seekers.

It is understood the Hotel which closed its doors to local homeless families back in June 2021 following a decision by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive not to renew the contract, has been contracted by the International Protection Office as a hub for asylum seekers arriving in Ireland.

Last March, it was reported by the Irish Times that Hotel Owners were being offered €100 per room per night to house asylum seekers and estimated that the State would spend close to €500 million over the following 34 months on such accommodation.

In April 2021, a protest was held outside the same hotel after Homeless Families in the area who had been living at the Hotel for three years were evicted by Dublin City Council and the Dublin Region Homeless Executive.

On Saturday and Sunday, Hundreds of residents gathered outside the Hotel after it emerged the State was using the Hotel to accommodate asylum seekers. The protests follow similar large-scale protests in the neighbouring community of East Wall.

for all any of us know, some of these people could have serious criminal convictions in their home countries. without their passports, we dont know anything about them.

and to those who say 'oh irish people aren't vetted' , thats not true, if an irish citizen has a serious criminal conviction especially sex related, the gardai will monitor that person but in terms of those arriving here without any passports, the gardai don't know anything about them and thus they are not monitored

there's a great community spirit in ballymun, people stick together. another big turnout. lots of women and children

^
Georgia is the top country of origin of those arriving here. need to discuss this. labelling people far-right is not the way to go.
