Broadcasting Complaint upheld over remark describing JK Rowling as "transphobic bigot"

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has upheld a complaint against Today FM's The last Word with Matt Cooper show in relation to a remark describing British Author JK Rowling as a "transphobic bigot" .

The complaint related to a broadcast last september in which panel members were discussing tweets made by Jedward alleging JK rowling was transphobic .

In the course of the discussion , one of the panel members stated that JK Rowling had become a “transphobic bigot”

The complainant claimed that this statement was not challenged by the presenter or any of the other panellists , it was a very serious accusation and as a result the segment lacked balance, impartiality and objectivity and was contrary to Section 48(1)(a) of the Broadcasting Act 2009 (fairness, objectivity and impartiality in current affairs)

In its defence the broadcaster claimed the segment was not a news or current affairs item and was not subject to the law in question .

The Broadcasting Committee rejected this defence , noting that the programme is generally understood to be a current affairs programme and the discussion was about a current affairs topic . The content constituted current affairs and was subject to the requirements set out in the Code of Fairness, Objectivity and lmpartiality in News and Current Affairs

The Committee noted that the nature of current affairs coverage is such that the presenter plays a critical role in challenging the views of guests and contributors, in the public interest .

The Committee noted that the presenter did not challenge the panel member or facilitate the exploration of alternative viewpoints.

The principle of fairness requires that the approach to covering issues should be equitable and proportionate.

The Committee were of the view that given the seriousness of the statements made by the panel member and the lack of challenge by the presenter, the broadcast was not fair and upheld the complaint against the broadcaster .

Rewarding illegal migration will put people on the dole and increase social housing lists

The governments plan to grant an amnesty to "thousands" of illegal migrants is deeply flawed and will put huge pressure on social services . The first thing that happens when you make an illegal migrant legal is that their current employer will let them go . This is because

good to see the defence forces behaving responsibly. its important that we dont allow this bullying and name calling of people for having different views. there is an agressive movement within academic circles to alienate ordinary people by labelling them as far right or fascist for simply holding a different point of view to them
