Carol Nolan TD resigns from Sinn Fein
Carol Nolan , Sinn Fein TD for Offaly has announced her resignation from the party.
The move came after a motion calling for Sinn Féin TDs to have a free vote on abortion was heavily rejected at the party's ard fheis.
Ms Nolan explained that as a result of the decision she had no choice but to resign :
I feel that as a pro-life republican woman that I no longer have a place in this party, which doesn't recognise or show genuine respect for the pro-life views of members.
It was disappointing that at the ard fheis ... the party's delegates voted against the motion to allow members to have a conscience vote on the issue of abortion .
If a TD votes for abortion they are responsible for all abortions that happen in this State. I cannot and will not support abortion and for that reason I have made a decision to leave Sinn Fein .
Ms Nolan who is a former Primary school teacher is currently suspended from the party after voting in the Dáil against holding a referendum on the Eighth Amendment .
After her resignation , she will remain in the Dail as an Independent TD .
Ms Nolan follows in the footsteps of other members who have also left sinn fein in recent years over the abortion issue , most notably husband and wife and Anne and Francie Brolly .
