Home GGE European Youth Championships a heart-warming success October 21st, 2021The old Irish proverb, Mol an ige agus tiocfaidh s, praise the young people and they will flourish, was very much in evidence when the GGE European Youth Championships took place in Brussels on Sunday, October 3.By John Harrington for GAA.ie The flagship event of GAA underage development in Europe, it featured 130 children from four clubs Brussels, Den Haag, Frankfurt, and Luxembourg competing against one another in a festival of Gaelic Games.Children aging in range from U-6s to mid-teens took part, and the buzz for players, coaches, and parents alike was something really special. We had a

Clondalkin - Local Anger with Bord Pleanála over Controversial Apartment Decision

Clondalkin - Local Anger with Bord Pleanála over Controversial Apartment Decision
Clondalkin : Apartment decision met with anger by locals
A decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission to San Guida Properties Ltd (Directors Alan Brunton , Frank Keogh , Eddie Kent) for Demolition of the two storey house known as 'San Guida'  and the construction of a four storey apartment block close to the historic village centre of clondalkin , has been met with anger from local residents .

The development (SD20A/0015) was given the go ahead by South Dublin County Council in March but subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála in June by local residents .

The proposed development had received strong local opposition including twenty-seven individual objections ,  objections from the Clondalkin History Society and the Sruleen Community Development society .

The Clondalkin History Society in its objection had argued that while government policy is to increase densities and building heights , due regard must be had for the protection of established character and the proposal is not in keeping with the character of a historic village like Clondalkin . The society also argued it would set a precedent for similar developments in the area transforming the character of clondalkin village while noting an excessive increase in density from 4.3 units per hectare to over 89 units per hectare.

In her report , Caryn Coogan , Planning Inspector for An Bord Pleanála , justified the increase in building height with reference to a decision by the Board in November to grant permission for a 155 bed , four storey nursing home on the grounds of Clondalkin Convent to the south . That proposal had resulted in widespread public protests by the Save our Convent Campaign in Clondalkin .

Speaking to the thetricolour.com , a local resident who wished to remain anonymous said that locals have become disillusioned with the planning system .

people in the area have lost faith in the planning system , I have spoken with many people who now say whats the point in voicing your concerns , nobody listens to them , neither the planning authority or An Board Pleanála , In many cases just one or two Planning Officers at local authority level can now decide on major developments impacting on peoples areas while at An Bord Pleanala , a quorum of Just three Board members can now decide major projects impacting peoples lives and these Board members dont even have to have experience in planning matters which is bizarre , some may have never read a building plan which is scary . These civil servants have too much power in their hands . Something needs to change . The planning system in Ireland is rotten to the core and needs restructuring  .

in the planning system there is too much power in the hands of a few , I've been saying this all along .

But also , I think people have also lost faith because of inconsistency in the decision making process . one month they tell you one thing while the next it could be a very different decision .

I also worry about pre planning meetings , I dont think pre planning meetings should be allowed to take place because planners and developers can get over friendly and the process may become impartial
^
fully agree derek also the planning system is set up to favour the super rich , if you have money you can get away with anything . the ordinary joe are just spit on someones boot .

^
that design has no imagination , its just a square blob .

i know clondalkin village well and this type of development will ruin it . they're importing all this from the continent

some will say .. oh we need houses , yes but THEY MUST BE PLANNED PROPERLY , I mean if your neighbour told you he was knocking down his house to build a 10 storey apartment block would you be ok with it , after all , the same logic applies , we need houses ??

we need proper planning taking into account the built heritage and historic value of places , this is not it
^
power , greed , corruption , either get used to it folks or fight back
