Placards reading "unvetted unwelcome", "women and children not safe. we are scared to walk our streets", "irish taxpayers funding foreign interests" and "not racist. not far-right. just concerned" were on display on Monday evening as residents in the Clondalkin area of Dublin took to the streets to protest a government decision to house large numbers of male asylum seekers in a local office building.

The Office Building known as Dolcain House which currently houses 186 Men from Countries such Georgia , Somalia and Algeria was the subject of a planning enforcement investigation by South Dublin County Council in September following complaints by locals that the State was using the building as a residental centre for asylum seekers without obtaining planning permission for change of use. In November, the State introduced planning exemption regulations to regularise the situation and provide for future use of a variety of buildings including office blocks as accommodation centres for asylum seekers without the requirement to obtain planning permission.  
 


The protests on Monday follow similar widespread protests accross Dublin in recent weeks amid a 20 year record high in the number of people claiming asylum in Ireland.

Figures from the International Protection Office which is responsible for processing asylum applications in Ireland show there were 13,651 asylum applications made in 2022 , an increase of 427% per cent on 2021 figures. The top five nationalities arriving in Ireland were from : Georgia, Algeria,Somalia,Nigeria and Zimbabwe. In addition to this figure, a further 70,000 people from Ukraine also arrived in Ireland under a separate system.

As bad as it must be for a lot of these refugees/ immigrants, the government bodies need to be held accountable for the safety and welfare of the local residents. I can bet there are no centres close to any TDs residencies and would also wager none of them have inspected these places themselves.

Hi dave, a distinction has to be made between someone who is "genuine" and someone who is Not genuine. There's no direct flights from any war torn region to Ireland so anyone who arrives at Dublin Airport claiming to be a refugee has passed through a number of other EU countries before arriving here. If they were genuinely fleeing for their safety why would they not claim asylum in the first safe country they arrived in.

Georgia and Algeria were the top nationalites claiming asylum in Ireland last year, there are no wars in either of these countries and on a journey from Algeria to Ireland you pass through lots of safe countries but yet they all end up in Ireland, why?

I mean We all want a better life but you have to go through the proper channels and if these people are simply looking for better economic conditions then they should use the WORK VISA SYSTEM instead which is the proper channel
