Conversion therapy ban and civil liberties

Conversion therapy is a form of therapy available to same sex attracted people who want to be heterosexual and to transgender people who want to be cisgender.

The therapy usually involves participants undergoing counselling and talk sessions with the intent of changing their thinking .

Four countries in the world ban the practice . These are Brazil, Ecuador, Germany and Malta . To a large extent the ban in these countries was due to the type of therapy being offered .

Ireland would become only the Fifth Country in the world to ban the practice should a Bill before the Seanad become Law .

The Bill entitled - "the Prohibition of Conversion Therapies Bill 2018" proposes to ..."prohibit conversion therapy, as a deceptive and harmful act or practice against a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression." .

The Bill which is currently at the third stage in the Seanad was initiated by a number Senators including Fintan Warfield , Catherine Ardagh , Lynn Ruane , Aodhán Ó Ríordáin; Niall Ó Donnghaile; Grace O'Sullivan; David P.B. Norris , Pádraig Mac Lochlainn , Colette Kelleher , Kevin Humphreys , Alice-Mary Higgins , Paul Gavan , Joan Freeman , Máire Devine; Gerard P. Craughwell , Rose Conway-Walsh , Jerry Buttimer , Victor Boyhan , Frances Black , Ivana Bacik

A tale of two cities  , transgender therapy ok but conversion therapy bad ??

While this Bill seeks to outlaw people from seeking therapy to keep their born gender , another bill seeks to do the opposite .

A Bill entitled the Gender Recognition Amendment Act 2017 is also at stage 3 in the Seanad and will make it legal for children to change their gender and includes a provision to allow children to identify as non-binary (neither male or female) in the future .The Bill was put forward by three of the people involved in the legislation to ban conversion therapy.- Senator Fintan Warfield of Sinn Fein ,Grace O'Sullivan of the Green Party and Independent Senator David Norris

Meanwhile the programme for government says it will ... "deliver a framework for the development of National Gender Clinics and Multidisciplinary Teams for children and adults" ,  despite evidence of harmful effects transgender therapy such as puberty blockers can have on children.

Personal Freedoms and Free will .  Nobody forcing anyone to undergo conversion therapy .

Whether you agree with conversion therapy or not is not the issue .

Everyone has free will . If people want to avail of Conversion Therapy Services thats their own personal business .

So long as the service is safe and based around counselling , then people should be free to choose the service like any other service in Ireland . But to Ban it outright is to take away peoples personal freedoms to decide for themselves about their own life and re-enforces the view that Ireland is a nanny state.

you'd think the Irish Council for Civil Liberties would be against such a ban but they campaigned for it .

^
sure the ICCL dont even support free speech which is the fundamental basis for all civil liberties
^
interesting video on conversion therapy - Leah is an ex-lesbian, as well as someone who experienced gender dysphoria as a child. Now she is married to a man and they have a young son and a daughter.

^
we either live in a mature society or we dont . if a mature adult wants to try conversion therapy its their business . nothing to do with anyone else
^
so it will be legal for children to have double mastectomy to change gender but illegal for therapy to discourage this .

transgender therapy is barbaric and yet this is perfectly ok by our government and anyone offering therapy to help children keep their existing gender is to be outlawed

What has happened to ireland .
^
if someone is unhappy living their life as transgender they will have to travel abroad to access conversion therapy .
^
COUNCIL- GOVT YOU VOTE THEM IN/ HOLOCAUST WAS AT GUN POINT.
but sure me wee darlin it's all the govts. fault- your life is not your own anymore.
AND NOW THERE IS NO QUICK FIX THROUGH EMMIGRATION... your call, your choice
^
WHEN ESTABLISHMENT CEASES TO EXIST-so too will new normal madness
YOUR CHOICE,AGAIN,TO KEEP OVERPAID IDIOTS IN CONTROL- grow up ffs
^
like others here , i'd be more worried about trans therapy , especially on children . its so awful
^
transgender therapy is much more damaging than conversion therapy . with trans therapy you have bodily mutilation , irreversible medication to stop the natural development of the body and serious side effects from drugs such as puberty blockers . why dont they ban transgender therapy .

This is NOT about racism , its about political organisations using the GAA to further a political agenda . this is about manufacturing and promoting the idea that we have a racism problem in Ireland even though there is no research to support that claim and in doing so shutting down any possible debate around peoples genuine concerns around immigration matters in Ireland . please dont allow yourself to be used by the

good to see the defence forces behaving responsibly. its important that we dont allow this bullying and name calling of people for having different views. there is an agressive movement within academic circles to alienate ordinary people by labelling them as far right or fascist for simply holding a different point of view to them
