Home GGE European Youth Championships a heart-warming success October 21st, 2021The old Irish proverb, Mol an ige agus tiocfaidh s, praise the young people and they will flourish, was very much in evidence when the GGE European Youth Championships took place in Brussels on Sunday, October 3.By John Harrington for GAA.ie The flagship event of GAA underage development in Europe, it featured 130 children from four clubs Brussels, Den Haag, Frankfurt, and Luxembourg competing against one another in a festival of Gaelic Games.Children aging in range from U-6s to mid-teens took part, and the buzz for players, coaches, and parents alike was something really special. We had a

Dalkey Nursing home development met with local opposition

Dalkey Nursing home development met with local opposition
Dalkey . Proposed Nursing home development near Bulloch Harbour
Plans by Bartra Property Ltd for construction of a 5 Storey Nursing home near Bulloch Harbour in Dalkey Co Dublin has been met with strong local opposition.

A total of 35 planning objections have been lodged with Dun Laoghaire County Council against the proposed development which includes the demolition of the existing 2 storey dwelling 'Maple Tree House'  and construction of a 104 bedroom nursing home, ranging in height from 2-5 storeys on a 1.48 acre site in Dublin's wealthiest suburb .

Former Late Late show host and newstalk presenter Pat Kenny who lives in the adjoining property was among those who lodged an objection .

In his objection Mr Kenny said the development would .. "change the entire character of the neighbourhood and hugely diminish the enjoyment that each currently has in their own property" and said "placing a 5 storey building in this setting amounts to vandalism" . Other issues raised by Mr Kenny included the close proximity of the development to the council's coastal fringe and said the development required "particular care and sensitivity" . Loss of badger habitat , traffic , scale ,loss of trees , inadequate drainage and lack of views for proposed residents were also among Mr Kenny's concerns .

In 2019 , plans by the same company Bartra Property ltd to build a 155 bed four storey nursing home on the grounds of the Presentation Convent in Clondalkin Co Dublin sparked public protest rallies to no avail and the company was later granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanala .  (link)

Dun Laoghaire County Council is expected to decide on the Dalkey proposal by 11th March  . Further details are available here - view application
