Letters : Rainbow Crossings - Is it "Equal" to give more importance to one group over another

Arklow Rainbow Crossing

It was interesting to hear the reason given by Arklow Council to install Ireland's first ever Rainbow Crossing .

A Spokesperson for Arklow Council said : - "We hope that this project will highlight to those passing through the main street that the community in Arklow and its environs is an inclusive one where everyone is treated equally . Arklow Municipal District is delighted to be setting an example on a national level in this regard and we hope that this project will lead the way for other local authorities and communities to follow " .

The question is this . Is it 'equal' to give special importance to one group in society over another . Surely , Treating everyone equal means treating everyone the same which means no special treatment for any one group .

A Normal Road Crossing would be treating everyone equal , it would also be inclusive of everyone because it doesn't alienate any one group or give preference to one group over another .

Lets Treat everyone equally was the official line of the state at the time of the same sex marriage referendum . Since then , it appears certain sections want to be more equal then others  . From Rainbow Flags over the GPO , our most iconic building , to Rainbow Flags in School , Rainbow themed Garda Cars , Buses , Post Boxes , Postage Stamps , Special programmes in schools aimed at prioritising the welfare of one group over others , now Rainbow Road Crossings and A WHOLE MONTH IN JUNE devoted by the state to the Rainbow and LGBTQ  cause . It would certainly appear that some are being treated "MORE EQUAL" then others .

Rainbow Buses - Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan, NTA CEO Anne Graham

i see clondalkin village got a rainbow crossing overnight , outside Tesco . We are never going to move forward if we keep treating people like children that need special treatments and symbols

^
i dont know any gay person who wants a rainbow crossing . its a waste of public money which could be used for home help for the elderly or feeding the homeless
^
a very small number of officals are making all these decisions . most ordinary people dont want this even the people they claim to be representing .

^
I see limerick has now got a rainbow crossing . This money would be better spent on home help for elderly or housing homeless .

Unless people radically change their vote come election time, more money will be wasted on projects like this .
