Letters : Rural Areas worried about Tourism impact of using Hotels for refugees instead of tourists

Letters : Rural Areas worried about Tourism impact of using Hotels for refugees instead of tourists
Innisfallen Hotel Killarney town
A number of Rural Business Owners have expressed concern that the use of Hotels for refugees instead of tourists will hit the tourism trade hard and have a negative impact on the local business community .

In County Kerry , one of Ireland's most popular Tourist Destinations , Five Hotels (The Lanterns Hotel and Ferry House Hostel in Tarbert , the Innisfallen Hotel and 3 Lakes hostel in Killarney town, and the Imperial Hotel in Tralee) have recently been acquisitioned by the State for use as refugee accommodation , a move which has been described as .. "having a catastrophic affect on tourism" according to local Restaurateur Paul Treyvaud

Writing on Social Medial last week , Mr
Treyvaud , who is an award winning Restaurateur and Owner of Treyvauds Restaurant in Killarney described the situation as "having a catastrophic affect on tourism"...

We are filling hotels, cutting supply, driving up prices resulting in a disaster , I can see it here in Killarney and know it’s the same in many other towns around Kerry and indeed all of Ireland.

One small town in kerry has given it’s only hotel over to refugees. That means no summer work for families, no spin of trade. For local shop, bar, restaurant etc which means a huge drop in much needed revenue.

This also means a huge drop in revenue for Revenue which ultimately means increased taxation
. It means increased hardship for every single person on this island. And it doesn’t take a genius to realise most of us are screwed already so do the maths . It’s a conversation we need to have immediately and I’m not afraid to put my hand up to start it.

-  Restaurateur Paul Treyvaud , Treyvauds Restaurant Killarney

Mr Treyvaud's concerns have been replicated by Business Owners in the neighbouring County of Cork where a number of Hotel Acquisitions for refugees have taken place .

In the seaside resort of Youghal , two of the towns three Hotels (The Quality Inn Hotel and the Old Imperial Hotel) have been taken over for refugees , a move which will result in the loss of 1,000 customers a week according to Padraig Hennessy , vice chairman of Youghal Chamber of Tourism and owner of Clancy’s pub on the seafront .

Speaking to the Irish Examiner  , Mr Hennessy of the Youghal Chamber of Tourism explained :

There are a lot of people who are upset about it. We were told that Youghal was a tourist town and that is what we are and that is what we should be and that is what we have been trying to do.

The Quality would bring 1,000 customers into Youghal a week. Outside of hospitality, you are talking about the local butcher shop, supermarkets, the petrol stations and so on. That is a lot

Padraig Hennessy, Youghal Chamber of Tourism

To date , roughly 27,300 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Ireland with 18,000 of those requiring accommodation according to figures stated in the Dail on Thursday by Minister Roderic O’Gorman. Minister O'Gorman said more Hotels would come online soon and that Student Accommodation was also being considered ... "My department is advancing other options such as student accommodation as well" .

NO HOTELS = NO TOURISM . The Tourism Trade is going to be hit big , Tourists spend a lot of money and prop up the local economies in rural areas . a conversation needs to had around this issue.
^
also , these hotels could be occupied for years , many refugees will decide to stay after the war is over . if tourism suffers , businesses will suffer too.
