Letters : Sexual assault on 91 yr old lady in waterford highlights need for safer borders

The recent conviction of a Moldovan man Eugeniu Olan for sexually assaulting a 91 year old Waterford Lady just six months after he arrived in Ireland , highlights the urgency for a more safe and responsible migration system here .

In the early hours of July 2021 , the attacker , Eugeniu Olan who had convictions in Italy for theft, carrying weapons and damage to public property broke into the Waterford home of a 91 year old lady and sexually assaulted her as she lay in bed leaving her bleeding with bruising to her neck, forearm, hand and leg.

Gardaí were alerted by a carer who lived with the lady and arrived in three minutes , they restrained the attacker after a violent struggle in which the gardai were assaulted and were forced to use batons on the man . They found the elderly woman "curled in a ball between the wall and the bed" with blood on the bed and her nightdress on the floor . The attacker , Eugeniu Olan had arrived in Ireland in February 2021 from Italy just 6 Months prior to the attack and was staying with relatives in Tramore .

The tragedy of this case is that it was preventable , if people like Olan , who have Criminal Convictions , especially serious or recent convictions were prevented from entering Ireland , the sexual assault on this lady wouldn't have happened .

While its impossible to prevent any crime from ever occuring , this one was preventable and the least we should expect is an immigration system that makes our citizens a little safer , a system that filters out potential dangers at source such as criminals and terrorists .
A system where people with criminal convictions in other countries are refused entry . A system where people with no traceable backgrounds are refused entry .

Its in all of our interests that such a system be put in place . Such a system would be fair but also tough on danger and would go someway towards making our citizens safer.

this is someones grandmother , great grandmother , aunt , mother . Sadly It will be swept under the carpet and ignored . we need to have a serious conversation about our immigration system and the dangers it poses to our family members and loved ones

^
a discussion on all of these issues is long overdue . a mature conversation needs to happen . we used to have good debates in Ireland up to about 20 years ago , until debating an issue became a crime almost , a thought crime anyway.
