Letters : The problem with Diversity Quotas

Letters : The problem with Diversity Quotas
In April 2016 , The BBC announced that by the year 2020 ,  its staff must be comprised of ...

Women 50%
Black & Asian people 15%
Lesbian, gay, bisex and transgender people 8%

5 Months after this , the BBC were firing people for being too white and male .

In October 2016 , Jon Holmes , a BBC radio presenter and award winning comedian was axed from his hit Radio 4 programme 'The Now Show' after 18 years for being white and male .

Jon Holmes who won two Baftas, eight Sony awards and two British Comedy awards was left completely shocked when he got a call from the BBC to tell him that after 18 years they were axing him to make way for "more women and diversity" .

Below , He describes the phone call from the BBC official .

I'll get straight to the point, I'm afraid for the next series, we're not inviting you back. We're recasting it with more women and diversity.

Mr Holmes revealed that since his sacking he heard from other stars rejected on same grounds by BBC bosses .

He told how one woman presenter was told - "we can't have you, because you are too white and middle class" .

He was also contacted privately by many presenters, actors and even agents who were told .. "We love your client. He's perfect for the role. But we're not allowed to even invite him in for a meeting because we've been told to cast someone Asian" .

Should I, as a white man (through no fault of my own), be fired from my job because I am a white man?

- BBC Radio presenter Jon Holmes

The answer of Course is No .

The only things that should matter when choosing a person for a Job are their Qualifications and ability to do the Job . Skin Colour , Race , Gender should not even enter into the process of selection .

If a man and a woman attend an interview and it turns out the woman is better qualified , well then of course the woman should be given the Job and at the same pay as the man ... however , if the man is more qualified and the woman still gets the Job simply because she is not a man , this means the company did not get the best person for the Job and as a result the performance of the company may suffer .

I think Most Irish Women dont want special privileges and automatic entitlements when it comes to work . They want Equal Pay which should be the case anyway without question but if it came down to being offered a Job over somebody else who was better qualified for the Job but was rejected simply because he was a man , Do women want this ?
