With the ongoing hate campaign against Qatar well and truly underway, lets not forget that as recently as 1977 France was still executing people by Guillotine. During this period of chopping people's heads off which lasted for almost 200 years. France held THREE OLYMPIC GAMES, a WORLD CUP and European Championship and nobody bat an eye or mentioned that it might be a bit cruel to be chopping people's heads off.
1908 Olympic Games England and Wales - period when thousands of Workers including Children were dying in Coal mines accross the Country as a result of dangerous working conditions. For example .. Oaks Pit in Barnsley Yorkshire 12 December 1866 (361 workers killed) in two separate explosions ... Albion Colliery in Cilfynydd Glamorgan 1894 (295 workers killed)... Wales Monmouthshire mine 1878 (270 men and boys killed) .... Wales Senghenydd Glamorgan 1913 (439 men and boys killed). Did anyone bat an eye.
Euro 2012 Poland and Ukraine . Documentary released by BBC - "Stadiums of Hate" - about Neo-Nazis football fans in Poland and Ukraine - BBC accused of over-reacting , told to pipe it down, not in Europe , no way could there be anything like this in Europe. During same period , many Polish and Ukrainian workers dying in coal mines due to poor working conditions. example - November 18, 2007, 101 ukrainians killed in Zasyadko Mine in Donetsk. Nobody bat an eye.
Roy Keane . We need to talk about Roy Keane
On Monday, Roy Keane who is in Qatar earning hundreds of thousands (if not millions) for his ITV World Cup analysis suddenly joins the anti-Qatar bandwagon and announces that Qatar shouldn't even be holding the world cup because of human rights abuses against gays and migrant workers.
During his career Roy Keane probably played over 100 games in Countries with similar laws to Qatar but never said anything about those Countries.
Roy Keane like the rest of us wears clothes and shoes that are made in some of the poorest Countries in the world were child labour is rampant.
In his autobiography, he talks about the time he bought a new Rolex Watch for 11,500 pounds. Where does he think the Gold and Diamonds on that watch came from ? most likely child labour camps in some of the most deprived countries of the world.
Everything from our Smartphones, our Shoes, our Clothes , our Jewellery comes from the human suffering in other Countries where children are put to work in dreadful conditions.
So lets not be hypocrites, lets not pretend that somehow we're the moral pillars of society. Before we judge others like the judgement which has been pronounced on Qatar, lets look closer to home and examine our own faults and failings.
