Letters: labelling people "far-right" over concerns for loved ones is very disrespectful
The Media coverage of recent protests around migration describing participants as everything from "far-right" to "anti-immigration" is a very sad reflection on the standard of reporting in Ireland today.
The Protests which started in East Wall before Christmas were predominantly based around people's concerns for the welfare of their family and children following news in October that 40% of asylum seekers were destroying their passports on arrival and yet were still being moved into communities regardless, making people fearful that some of these people may have criminal convictions in their home countries or may even be wanted for terrible crimes such as rape or murder.
Joining the community protests were settled migrants themselves who like their Irish neighbours did not want to see any harm come to their loved ones by an ill-thought-out policy of moving large numbers of undocumented men into their community without prior vetting.
Nevertheless, holding such concerns earned people the title of "far-right" and "anti-immigrant" and lately the word "terrorism" has appeared to describe people raising such concerns online with calls for such discussion to be de-platformed from social media.
It is the nature of any protests that there will always be radical elements on both ends (left and right). I remember during the anti-water charge protests there were people beside me waving communist flags. In the same way there are a tiny number involved in the current protests that would be fans of you-know-who ! . They are a tiny number in comparison to the ordinary folk taking part in these protests, yet the media focus is always on them rather than the majority who are ordinary hardworking people who have genuine concerns around this issue.
It is not 'far-right' to love your children and want them to be safe on the streets.
Its not 'far-right' to love your wife, your mother, your daughter, family and friends and want to ensure their safety.
None of this is 'far-right' and while most Journalists are good people, it is those who are peddling this mantra that have the stage and the spotlight and its damaging trust in the media but is also allowing the government off the hook in relation to an area of migration policy that needs to be addressed.
