New Dublin Senior Hurling captain Eoghan O'Donnell speaks to DubsTV
I would like to draw your attention to a parental watchdog website irishparents.blogspot.com which was set up in 2020 by a group of concerned parents and teachers who are working together to highlight the fact that many of the newer more modern films, novels and plays which have been recently added to the Junior and Senior Cycle and which our children are studying in English class contain a lot of objectionable and shocking material.
Since 2014, when books like John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things and Darren Shan's Cirque du freak began appearing , the selection on the prescribed NCCA lists (from which teachers must select texts) has been widening to include more and more dark-themed books that deal with topics like demonic possession, murder, suicide, and sexual violence in a violent, graphic, gratuitous way.
The scenes are very descriptive and detailed, written in what can only be described as gratuitous, so for any child who is not normally exposed to horror and violence and graphic sexual pornography, they are going to be potentially traumatised by this material being introduced in the classroom under the guise of a relevant new curriculum. The sexual scenes are very graphic and explicit and the messages that the students are getting from some of these texts is that it is normal and good if they, as minors, engage in as much promiscuous sexual activity as possible.
Wendi Drinan, the English teacher who first brought this situation to light, was interviewed recently about how teenagers' mental health is going to be affected by exposure to these explicit texts and had this to say: - "I can definitely say that no teenager's mental health is going to be unaffected by reading this inappropriate material. The books we read and the films we watch in our formative years stay with us and often have a profound and lasting effect on us. And when their TEACHER is standing up there at the front of the class promoting this stuff it has even more weight and influence . One parent made a comment after watching the video (on irishparents.blogspot.com ) that it looks like the NCCA is almost using these books for grooming purposes in the classroom and it is certainly starting to look like that when you consider that My report shows that an imbalance in the choice of texts has emerged: 52% of the Senior Cycle novels and 15% of the Junior Cycle Novels contain a high level of inappropriate, explicit, graphic, gratuitous or offensive sexual material" .
As parents, educators, health professionals and citizens, we have a duty of care to protect our adolescents from exposure to material that could have a long- term detrimental impact on their future lives as young adults, at a time in their lives that they are unable to do so for themselves .
The books are chosen by the NCCA : National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, the statutory body that advises the Minister for Education and Skills on curriculum content .
It is time for parents to get involved, as this is the only way we are going to see any change, in the choice of texts, come about.
The louder parents protest, the more they will be listened to. It’s up to us to protect our children. No one else is going to do it for us. NB parents should take the time to go on to the NCCA web-site NCCA.ie and give suggestions of good alternative books, plays, and films. Check out irishparents.blogspot.com for ideas .
