Profile : Peter Casey
Mr Casey has been heavily critical of both the current president Michael D Higgins and Ireland's membership of the EU
With regards to president Michael D Higgins , Mr Casey believes that too much public money is being spent on the office of president and the public should be entitled to a breakdown of the president's expenses .
he is living in a 97-room mansion and there are people sleeping on the streets in Dublin. It doesn’t seem right that that is happening
People are questioning if we are getting value for money. They recognise we need a head of state and that’s important. But we definitely don’t need such an expensive one
Mr Casey added that president Higgins "let Ireland down" by going to Cuba where he hailed the late Fidel Castro a “giant among global leaders".
I believe he was wrong to go to Cuba on the taxpayers money. I have been to Cuba and it is a strange, depressing place, trapped in time.I talked to the tobacco workers in the fields and their lives are completely controlled by the state. There is no vibrancy, entrepreneurship, buildings are falling down. I went there to understand it and it was very sad . I think he let Ireland down. I don’t think it was appropriate
In relation to the EU , Mr casey believes Ireland could do better outside the EU than Within
As a businessman who has worked in five continents and lived in America for more than 20 years now, I firmly believe we could do a lot better outside the EU than within.
The reality is that Germany makes the rules and like the model prisoner, our government does what it is told. Germany does what's best for Germany and we get the crumbs. Is that really the best future we can see for ourselves? We have much more in common with the UK and the USA than Germany.I think it's time for a national debate on the issue.
