Remembering all those who stayed during the Famine . We are here today because of you

1840s Ireland was a different world to today . There was no humanitarian aid agencies to help people stay at home . As a result many Irish people set sail for places such as America and Canada . But most didn't . Most of the population , some 6.6 million people stayed at home and for this we must be very grateful because we are here today because of it . We thank them for this courage and bravery in the face of terrible times while at the same time wishing all those who emigrated all the best  .

The 1960s saw the establishment of Aid Agencies and Charities which made it more possible for people living in areas striken by famine and natural disasters to remain in their homelands.

Concern was established in 1968 to help the war torn people of Biafra , followed by Trocaire established in 1973 to help the flood victims of Bangladesh , followed by Goal in 1977 established to help the people of Calcutta . In the 1980s , in response to disasters around the world , such as the famine in Ethiopia , Celebrities such as Bob Geldof in conjunction with the Media and Governments began to mobilize people around the world to donate money and time to helping charities and victims of famine and war etc.

This Aid made it possible for those people to remain at home close to their loved ones and to pass on their culture and traditions to the next generation .

SO EVERYBODY IN IRELAND TODAY IS IRISH THROUGH DESCENDANCY- TRIPE
AND EVERY IRISH ABROAD ARE NOT- DOGS BOLLOX- READ YOUR OWN HEADLINE
^
IVAUS , whats your problem , its a fact that the majority of the population currently residing in Ireland are descended from people who didn't emigrate during the famine . do u think we are all descended from people living in America and we all moved to Ireland after the famine .
^
LET COOL HEADS PREVAIL- NO PROBLEM DAVE- IRISH DO NOT HAVE TO JUSTIFY EXISTANCE.
READ THE HEADLINE- ITS TOTALLY INCORRECT- WE SHOULD ALL KNOW OUR HISTORY.
HEADLINES ARE NOT FACTS- THATS THE PROBLEM WITH MSM GLOBALLY...apology accepted
^
perhaps constituents of simon coveney could pass him on this article . He always uses this famine argument as a means to excuse mass immigration into Ireland . He's comparing chalk and cheese . apart from anything statistics show those arriving in Ireland through the asylum system are coming from Safe countries such as Albania , Georgia , South Africa and Nigeria which is listed as a safe country of origin by the uk and which has 5-6 million tourists a year , also you must pass through lots of safe countries on a journey from nigeria to Ireland , why not claim asylum in any of those countries .

it is clear that most of the people simon coveney wants his constituents to see as these terribly deprived people fleeing war and persecution are in fact economic migrants , and the asylum system was not set up for economic migrants

Irish starving,Irish children living in poverty, homeless crisis.1840 no 2016.Our government and media are telling us we are doing well.Me arse, stuck in debt, dying currency, ruled by the EU monarchy of Queen Merkel and her cabinet of criminals. The thing about history is it just keeps repeating itself because the human race stopped having original ideas a long time ago.If we are asked to keep accepting this replacement population,I say stick them.Irish went away to work and got treated like dirt.Immigrants come to Ireland, most sit on their hole or open a shop for their own and get treated like royalty. If you can afford to get to Europe via human trafficking gangs, then you weren't starving. The real refugees are still fighting for their countries or in Turkey or Jordan, not sitting around Ireland and Europe drinking coffee and moaning about the weather. Please start pestering td's and local council clowns about these issues, they really are puppets,be the one pulling the strings not the audience.Quick word on Gob Beldof, it was Midge Ure's idea,he just hijacked it,made a fortune and everyone forgot his career was dead before band aid.Shame the sword didn't slip during his knighthood and cut his cabbage head off.Gob Beldofs head 28 pounds of useless fat.

This is a very good point .

I have seen a number of articles in the Irish Times likening the migrant crisis to irish emigration during the famine.

clearly , they are not the same , if the people of Ireland had the humanitarian aid available to them like the countries in Africa do today , very few would have chosen to board ships for America and Canada .

I also like the point about America being are closest neighbouring country to the west , because this is important , migrants are supposed to seek asylum in their closest neighbouring countries , not traveling have way around the world to whatever country happens to have the best welfare or economy .

john connors gave a fantastic speech at that event. its only when notable people like john speak out that things will change but speaking out comes at a price, that price is persecution as we've seen with Enoch Burke.

Biology is not Bigotry. Enoch Burke is in Jail 4 weeks today, why is the church of Ireland not trying to get him released, it was their school after all that got him jailed. What kind of a church would stand by and allow a good man to rot in prison.
