Russell statue Vandalised , follows Taoiseach remarks describing Russell as 'Nazi collaborator'

Russell statue Vandalised , follows Taoiseach remarks describing Russell as 'Nazi collaborator'
A statue in Fairview Park commemorating Irish Republican Sean Russell has been targeted by vandals following remarks made by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar describing Russell as "a nazi collaborator" .

On Monday , vandals spray painted the base of the statue in the colours of the LGBT movement .

The attack followed remarks made by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to 2FM radio singling out the Russell monument as one needing to come down in the wake of the Black Lives Matter statue purge.

..."We have a few of our own statues we may need to take down. There is a statue in Fairview Park in Dublin of an Irish republican man who was also a Nazi collaborator." .. explained Mr Varadkar.

Sean Russell was an Irish Republican who fought in the 1916 rising , war of Independence and Civil War . He died aboard a Nazi U-boat in 1940 and was buried at sea .

Russell had gone to Germany to secure arms for a military campaign against British rule in the North. He had made similar trips in previous years to other Countries such as America and the Soviet Union.

On Sunday, September 9th 1951. The National Graves Association group erected a monument to Russell in Fairview Park in North Dublin .

An unveiling Ceremony was attended by over 1,000 republicans joined by members of the public who marched to the monument from Parnell Square.

A Garda report from the time stated that around 5000 people in total were in attendance at the unveiling ceremony ... "The procession marched to Fairview via O’Connell Street, Amiens Street, North Strand, arriving at Fairview Park at about 1pm where the general public had already assembled in large numbers, many no doubt attending from the point of view of curiosity. Nevertheless, the crowd at this period was not far short of five thousand people, including those on the paths and roadway outside the Park proper."

Since then , the statue has been the target of repeated political vandalism .

In July 1953 , the raised right arm was broken off by people claiming the arm was raised in a communist salute rather than oratorical pose .

In 2004 the statue was decapitated by Anti fascists who deemed Russell a nazi collaborator and in 2008 , the statue was daubed with swastikas .

In May 2009, a new bronze statue was erected but in July the statue was again vandalised by Anti Fascists with graffiti proclaiming Russell to be Nazi Scum .

A relative of one of the volunteers commemorated on the base of the monument has condemned the latest attacks.

Speaking in a youtube video posted to the National Party Channel  , Donegal Man Denis kelly , whos relative John James Kelly is commemorated on the statue
 said :

.."They are taking away from the sacrifices men like this my family gave to this country for the betterment of the people in it and thats disgraceful"

Thank you Charlie,

Don't you find it at the very least interesting that Mr. Varadkar speaks of the shame of Pro life folk holding signs against Abortion AND the Pro life people were within literally minutes attacked and their property damaged. Now he preaches about Nazi links to the statue, next day it is defaced!.

Don't know about you but I have never believed in happenstance or coinsedence.

I would like to see the National Graves Association look after pro treaty graves also . They do an excellent job . Its time to let bygones be bygones .

I could not agree more, Bull.
The single most Shameful part about all these demands from woke point seekers IS in my opinion, the revisiting of history purely to find objection.
Because if allowed to continue the history of our nations (good & bad) is simply whitewashed. Leaving a purified eutopian, almost sterile and false picture of each nations people and as important (again in my opinion) the struggle, pain and great loss that finally resulted in the Ireland of today.

I never knew him only of his political party identity ireland but its a difficult road for people when they voice political beliefs that go against the narrative in Ireland. I recently saw a left-wing group (@IrlagainstFash) actually celebrating getting people fired from their jobs because of the person's political beliefs while at the same time banging on about 'workers rights' and 'the working class' and 'wo
