Sports Centres and Schools to be considered as Ministers urged to find asylum seeker accommodation
Minister Roderic O'Gorman has written to fellow Ministers urging them to find accommodation for asylum seekers with 2000 beds needed by the end of March.
The letter circulated to Ministers on Thursday urged them to find accommodation including .. "Sports Centres… Conference Facilities, Arts centres, Student Leisure Centres" and "any other large Buildings".
The response to the ongoing migration crisis has entered an extremely difficult phase with no apparent accommodation at scale for international protection applicants available into the short term to medium term. In order to minimise the possibility that those in need will be left without accommodation in the short to medium term, I am asking for your urgent assistance in sourcing, from your sector or stakeholders, any large building (capacity of 50-100 or greater) that can be utilised by my department immediately to shelter new arrivals in the immediate term
Responding to the Minister's pleas on Friday, Sports Ministers Catherine Martin and Thomas Byrne wrote to 70 sporting bodies urging them to come forward with .. "large sports halls where camp beds and mattresses" could be set up .
The Department of Education announced it would make a number of Schools available during the holiday period while Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien said that 60 properties were being refurbishment to accommodate up to 2,700 asylum seekers.
The Minister's request for more Accommodation Centres comes amid a wave of escalating protests in Communities accross Ireland opposed to the government's current migration policies.
On Thursday, hundreds of residents in Mullingar in County Westmeath turned out to protest plans to use Columb Military Barracks as an accommodation centre for asylum seekers. The 10-hectare Barracks in the centre of Westmeath town was closed in 2012 but had been used by community groups in the area for recreational purposes, while on Friday, residents in the neighbouring county of Meath took to the streets of Navan to protest the use of the "Ma Dwyers" guesthouse in the town.
The protests follow a wave of similar protests in recent days including a protest in the Heritage Town of Lismore in County Waterford were 300 people gathered in opposition to plans to house 112 asylum seekers at Ireland's oldest Hotel Lismore House, while in Dublin, Hundreds took to the streets on Monday and Tuesday in what has become regular protests accross the City against the government's migration plans.
Figures from the International Protection Office in Dublin show people from Georgia and Algeria were the top claimants of international protection (asylum) in 2022. A further 70,000 people also arrived from Ukraine during 2022 under a separate system.
On Thursday, RTE reported that up to 180,000 asylum seekers and refugees could be in the system by the end of 2023. The figure was contained in briefing material for Government Chief Whip Hildegarde Naughton and released following a Freedom of Information request.
