A YouGov poll of 1,700 adults has shown a majority of three to one people want to change the countries asylum laws so that migrants who arrive in the UK illegally through a safe country such as France would be barred from claiming asylum . Of those surveyed , a majority of four to one were also in favour of deporting failed asylum applicants.
The findings come amid a surge in migrant boat crossings accross the English Channel from France to Dover .
So far this year , 5,034 illegal migrants have crossed the English Channel to Dover from France with 110 migrants arriving on Monday alone with figures expected to exceed last year’s record of 8,420 crossings .
Responding to the dire situation Britain's Home Secretary Priti Patel told the House of Commons the public were "absolutely fed up" and "demoralised" .. "The British public are fed up , they're absolutely fed up and demoralised with what we have been seeing" and said that new immigration legislation would be introduced to parliament to address the situation.
Since the illegal boat crossings began in 2018 , it is estimated that some 15,758 people have crossed to the UK illegally in small boats from France .
