Why Graham Norton is wrong about Brexit
Graham Norton recently appeared on the RTE late late show (Fri 21 October) in which he made a number of spurious claims in relation to Brexit (Britain leaving the EU) that he did not substantiate with any evidence .
In this Article , I will prove Graham Norton wrong on a number of the points he made.
So lets look at what he says :
I was astonished that the people bought the pack of lies that they were sold .
They were promised things that were never going to happen .
People over 60 passed that thing , people over 60 closed so many doors on young people and shut down options about studying abroad , living abroad working in places .
- Graham Norton talking to ryan tubridy
So where do we start .
Well first of all , if you say someone is telling lies shouldn't you be able to offer at least one example to back up your claim ? but Mr Norton doesn't offer us any example nor does he offer any evidence . Nor is he asked by Mr Tubridy to provide such evidence or explain what he means.
Secondly , what promises ? again , if you say someone has "promised you things" , shouldn't you be able to offer one example of something that was promised and "never going to happen" , again Mr Norton had no examples of anything. Nor is he asked by Mr Tubridy to provide such .
He then says "people over 60 passed that thing" .
In actual fact , there was NO exit poll for the brexit referendum , no exit poll , the only way to statistically measure the age of voters is through an exit poll , there was none .
But even if they were 60 , so what , is Graham Norton saying that older people shouldn't be allowed vote , should we discriminate ?
EU laws impact people of all ages , all races , all religions , I've never read an EU law that says (oh by the way , this EU law only applies to people who are 18,25,30) check your age to see if this law applies . Turning young against old is a terrible thing to do , this was a dirty tactic all through the remain campaign .
Now to the funniest part of his statement . Its kind of ironic , but this really was a lie told throughout the remain campaign .
Graham Norton says - "people over 60 shut down options about studying abroad , living abroad , working in places"
Ok , so according to Graham , Brexit will prevent British students from studying in the EU .
Thats funny , because According to UNESCO , statistics show that the majority of foreign students studying inside the EU actually come from outside the EU .
Take Ireland for example .
In 2014 - A total of 12,861 foreign students came to Ireland , 8,421 (65%) came from outside the EU , while just 4,440 (35%) came from inside other EU states.
In the UK, there were 428,724 foreign students , 311,725 (73%) came from outside the EU , while just 116,999 or (27%) came from inside other EU states.
Therefore , given this FACT that most foreign students are coming from outside the EU , this means , a Britain outside the EU would result in even more British students studying inside the EU and going to other EU Countries to study !!!
Ok , so now that we've dismissed the student argument lets now look at the worker argument .
In 2014 , eurostat figures showed that 1.6 million workers from outside the EU moved to EU Countries . This represented 47% of all migrant workers for that year .
Thats a lot of workers , Britain will now simply become be part of this flow , all you do is simply apply for a work visa , if you see a job in an EU Country , you apply for it , if your application is successful , no problem , go and work in that country . thats it .
In fact , Graham Norton of all people should know this , he used the Visa system himself when he moved to the UK from Ireland in the 1980s , as did thousands of other Irish People prior to the establishment of the EU in 1993 . Which makes his statement on live TV even more bizarre .
Finally , and this bothered me , Both Graham Norton and Ryan Tubridy were both in favour of repeating the referendum until they laughed "we get the right result like we did in Ireland"
Given the fact that just minutes earlier , Graham was praising irish people for remembering their history and identity , does Graham know that for hundreds of years Irish People were not allowed vote or hold public office because the Rich didn't like it , now they dont like it again .
