Action Continues In 'Top Oil' Leinster PP Schools SF 'A'

GAA

Last years defeated finalists Marist College, Athlone, produced a remarkable comeback to edge out St Patricks Classical School of Navan by 3-13 to 1-17 in a thrilling Top Oil Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior A encounter at Kiltoom yesterday.

Few would have imagined that when Diarmuid McCabe pointed from close range after 41 minutes to give the Meath school a six point lead, that his score was to be their last of the tie.

St Pats had looked really potent going forward up to then, and while they were also leaking scores at a brisk rate, the scoring ability of players like Cian Swaine, Caolan Ward and McCabe looked to be too much for Marist College to handle.

Goals from man of the match Kieran Colclough and corner forward Tom OCarroll had given Marist College a narrow 2-6 to 0-11 interval lead, but the third quarter of the tie belonged to St Pats. McCabes scrambled goal put them in front and they piled on the points to stretch the gap further.

But Marist College made a breakthrough in the 45th minute when St. Brigids club mates Brian Derwin and OCarroll combined to produce their third goal. Eddie Nolan added another point and with Kieran Colclough now wreaking havoc from general play, while striking his long range frees superbly, the home side fought back for a dramatic win.

Meanwhile, a second replay will be required to separate Good Counsel College, New Ross and Scoil Dara, Kilcock, after they again finished level at Baconstown yesterday, 1-11 to 0-14. Similar to their first meeting, Good Counsel College hit the only goal of the game, with Eoin Porter firing home in the first period of extra-time.

But Scoil Dara, Kilcock, responded with some well-taken points to stay in the championship. The Kildare side had also come from behind in the opening 60 minutes, which ended 0-8 apiece.

The winners of the second replay will face Colaiste Mhuire of Mullingar in the quarter-finals, after they knocked-out reigning champions St Benildus College on Wednesday. The Westmeath side built on a six points to nil interval lead to win convincingly by 2-13 to 0-7, with Conan OHara scoring both goals at TEG Cusack Park.

Top Oil Leinster PP Schools SF A Quarter-Finals: Good Counsel College or Scoil Dara, Kilcock v Colaiste Mhuire, Mullingar; Scoil Aodhain v Moate CS; Marist College, Athlone v Wicklow Schools; Knockbeg College v St Peters, Wexford.
