Mikey Murnaghan: 'We want to win the last Ulster U-21'

Mikey Murnaghan: 'We want to win the last Ulster U-21'

By John Harrington

Monaghan U-21 footballer, Mikey Murnaghan, hopes the Farney County can write themselves into the history books by becoming the last ever county to win an EirGrid Ulster U-21 title.

From next year the U-21 inter-county football championships will be replaced by an U-20 grade, and Murnaghan says the defending Ulster champions are keen to hold onto their title.

Yeah, there's a bit of prestige about it. You wanna be...obviously you want to be known to be the last team ever to lift an Ulster championship and potentially then an All-Ireland.

That's definitely in the backs of our minds. Last year was the first time we won it for the guts of 15 years, the Ulster championship.

I don't think it's every been done back to back in Monaghan so hopefully we can go on and get that trophy and then build. Because there's still a sort of chip on our back from last year against Cork, we still feel the game got away from us and that.

We were very disappointed to lose. It was a tight game. We were mad to get back at Mayo because 2013 they beat us out here in the semi-final in the minor championship.

So we were mad to get back at them. But look, it's a new team this year and we're just trying to do back to back.

Everyone putting Monaghan down and thinking they're finished and that, and the lads just want to prove that we're still there and we're going to be there.

Murnaghan is now also part of the Monaghan senior panel and hopes he can lay down a marker while fellow defenders like Vinny Corey and Dessie Mone are on the injured list.

Yeah, it's nice to get the call up, he said. My club were playing in the intermediate ulster championship, we lost the final of it to Pomeroy so I wasn't called in then until December or that.

Vinny Corey and Dessie Mone are out injured at the minute. They'll be coming back too. Once they're out you're trying to get a foothold in the senior team maybe.

So they'll be coming back. It's about trying to get in a bit of shape, try and get in ahead of them and make it as difficult as them to get in. Two good players.

Monaghan are unbeaten after two League matches a win over Mayo and a draw with Cavan but Murnaghan admits survival in Division One is their first priority.

We'd be happy, he says. We went over to Mayo fairly confident. We knew that we needed a big scalp. Obviously I wasn't involved last year but players are still hurting from that defeat to Longford.

Everyone putting Monaghan down and thinking they're finished and that, and the lads just want to prove that we're still there and we're going to be there.

It was a bit disappointing only getting a point against Cavan but them games, local rivals, those games take on a life of their own.

Obviously at the start of the year you'd think that six points would keep you up. It's about getting six points as quick as possible and then trying to push on.

I don't think there's semi-finals in the league this year so the aim is to get to six points and push on from there.
