Round-up: Wednesday's BOI McKenna Cup action

GAA

Bank of Ireland McKenna Cup

Derry 0-10 Tyrone 0-10

Monaghan 0-15 Donegal 2-7

Cavan 1-14 Armagh 1-9

There were wins for Monaghan and Cavan in the Bank of Ireland McKenna Cup this evening while reigning Ulster champions Derry claimed a hard-fought draw against Tyrone.

It looked like Rory Gallagher's team were destined for defeat when they trailed by 0-9 to 0-3 after 39 minutes, but they dominated the contest thereafter.

Tyrone would only score one more point, as Derry steadily reeled them in.

A third point of the night from Shane McGuigan really got them rolling, and then further scores from Niall Toner two frees, Brendan Rogers, and Lachlan Murray ensured spoils were shared.

Monaghan produced a solid performance to run out two-point winners over Donegal in a match they edged throughout.

Joe Bradley Walsh gave Donegal a fast start with a goal after just two minutes, but Monaghan kept chipping away and were soon level.

They finished the half the stronger team with four unanswered points that gave them a 0-9 to 1-4 lead at half-time, with a quickfire brace of points by Shane Carey particularly eye-catching.

A Luke McGlynn penalty for Donegal briefly brought the teams level in the second-half but it was Monaghan who found a winning surge in the dying minutes with converted frees by Michael Bannigan and Rory Beggan.

Cavan will have taken a lot of satisfaction from their five-point win over Armagh.

A goal after nine minutes put them four points ahead, but Armagh were the slightly better team for the rest of the half and went in leve at the break, 1-6 to 0-9.

Cavan started the second half strongly though with points from Man of the Match Dara McVeety and Oisin Brady and then really took control when Cian Madden and Tiernan Madden also landed scores from play.

That gave them a five-point buffer on the scoreboard and Armagh never seriously threatened to reel them in from there.
