Letter to Editor - Direct Provision and Asylum

Letter to Editor - Direct Provision and Asylum
Letter to Editor 20-11-2019
Dear Editor ,

I just wanted to write to you about asylum seekers and direct provision.

Figures from the department of Justice show there were 3,762 asylum applications lodged in Ireland between January and September compared to 2,641 for the same period last year, an overall increase of 42% .

The top 5 Countries of origin for asylum seekers entering Ireland in 2019 are Albania , Georgia , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Nigeria  - Link

In August , A Department of Public Expenditure report entitled "Direct Provision : Overview of current accommodation expenditure" indicated that upwards of 120 million would be spent this year on the Direct Provision System , up 50% on 2018 - Link

Is it fair and reasonable that even though the statistics show most asylum seekers are coming from Safe Countries , we will spend 120 million this year on accommodation , opening new centres and apartment complexes around the country while our own homeless figures exceeds 10,000 and the number of rough sleepers continues to rise as the cold weather arrives  .

A distinction needs to be made between those who are genuine refugees and those who are not . Sadly in Ireland there is an unwillingness to address this issue which is resulting in more and more centres and causing conflict within communities .

In 2005 , the then Justice Minister Michael McDowell told a select Committee on Justice and Equality that .. "If Irish people had even the remotest idea of the nonsense that lies behind a huge amount of these bogus claims, it would try their patience to the limit" .. "There is a large amount of political correctness in Ireland, much of which is manifestly bogus. I never see anybody involved in the NGO sector ever admitting that there is a major problem with the fraudulent and far-fetched nonsense masquerading as asylum seeking here. It is about time we said it"

McDowell went on to say he would like to be able to interview asylum seekers at the airport (which is where most arrive in Ireland) but the UN wouldn't let him .. "I would much prefer to have a system whereby we could interview people at the airport, find out their cock and bull story and say "You're going home on the next flight". Unfortunately, however the UN convention requires me to go through due process in respect of all these claims" .. explained mcdowell - Link

I think McDowell was on to something . I mean , there are clearly no wars in Albania , Georgia , Zimbabwe , Nigeria or South Africa . If they want to come to Ireland they should have to go through the proper channels .. i.e apply for work visa etc just like irish people did when they emigrated . We went through the proper channels . It is clear that the Asylum System in Ireland is being abused , the abuse of the system is leading to conflict within communities around Ireland such as with Achill , Oughterard , Ballinamore etc . The issue of fraudulent claims needs to be addressed but instead its being swept under the carpet and the result is that more and more centres are opening resulting in more and more conflict .

Thank you for taking the time to read and I attach some charts for your attention .

Yours Sincerely,

Ronan

bye bye ireland . god help us all , asylum applications will explode under the new government .

None of the parties in question are willing to address the issue that statistics show most asylum seekers arrive at DUBLIN AIRPORT FROM SAFE COUNTRIES and are not actually refugees. for example last year , Albania and Georgia were the top 2 countries of origin for asylum seekers .

over the past 20 years Nigeria has been the overall top country of origin for asylum seekers despite the fact that the vast majority of the Country is safe , even if there were pockets of trouble , people could just move elsewhere within the country , instead they travel through lots of other SAFE countries to arrive in Dublin Airpot . And us the Fools just turn a blind eye

I genuinely believe there is something wrong with many people in politics today.

they have tunnel vision , many have been indoctrinated at university and dont even realise it that they are incapable of rational thinking around many issues

Donegal and Ireland is already enriched long before Direct Provision

Donegal TD Thomas Pringle spoke recently about the cultural benefits Asylum Seekers will bring to Letterkenny on foot of a new direct provision centre in the town. While he didn't give any examples or explain what benefits exactly , as someone who has lived with a Direct Provision centre
